Is the new Explorer SE any Good??

I've been getting this question a lot since the SE came on the scene. Today I received two phone calls from customers of ours. Both guys made great finds on their first hunt with their new SE. One found his first gold coin: a 1902 $5 gold piece, AND an 1854 Seated Half Dollar. The other guy found one piece of gold jewelry and four pieces of silver jewelry hunting the beach in wet sand. This was yesterday evening in a short "after work" hunt. I tend to let the end users tell me what they think. Both feel it's the best Explorer to date. Good hunting, David@Dixie

I'm not saying that the new Explorer SE isn't better that any of the other Explorer machines since I don't own the SE. I'm still having fun with my Explorer XS and haven't felt the need to switch to anything better. My question for you is even though these fellows with the new SE machines might be finding some nice finds, who is to say that they couldn't have found these finds with the XS or the Explorer II if they would have swung their coils over the same spot? I would also like to know what depth these fellows were finding these things at and were they deeper than say the Explorer II could go? Thanks for any more input you can give me and any other fellows on the forum who may want to know the same thing.

I'm a long time Explorer user as are many here on the forum, So when My SE arrived this week the first thing I checked as I do on any detector is the recovery speed. Recovery speed is important especially sites littered with aluminum or older sites laced with iron.

The SE does in fact have a faster audio recovery speed and visual as well, I compared and seen the difference between my XS and the SE. This will pay dividends out in trashy areas where masking is at it's worst, Now the SE should peek between trash with better separation over the older explorers.

Relic hunters will notice this from the beginning, Now's the time to research those older pounded sites laced with iron.

For Sounds, Use Ferrous mode with iron mask set at All-Metal (AM) which will enhance the weaker masked signals, Going to be some good finds made by this new machine.

Got three good machines now, T-2, Explorer SE and MXT.

Can't say on the beach scenario, as I didn't ask about depth. It was the fact that he was able to hunt the wet sand without any problems. Most likely any of the Explorer's would have given like results. As for the coins found, it was a site littered with immense trash of all descriptions (no modern trash however) and the recovery speed was a factor. I've always felt that if you are happy with your detector, stay with it until something that is superior comes along. The SE is an improvement over the previous models, but how important that is to each person is their decision to make. The number one concern I've heard since the Explorer XS was introduced was swing weight/balance. The SE's reduction in weight (approximately 5 oz) will make a difference to some. The new coil reduces weight by just over 2 oz. I'm sure we will hear more in the coming days. Good hunting, David@Dixie

Thanks David for the reply for all of us. I'm sure as time goes by we will all be reading about even more great finds found by the SE and I hope they will post these great finds for all of us to see. I have to agree that the weight of the XS seemed a little heavy, but after using it for some time now I don't have an issue with the weight and I do have one of those swingy things. I'm sure there are some fellows who jump on the bandwagon and have to have the newest and latest machine as soon as they are available, but for me and others I'm sure, we can't afford to buy new machines every time a new one comes on the market just to have one. Maybe in time when the SE really proves itself to be so much better than the XS and the Explorer II maybe then I will look into getting one. Thanks again David.

Dave gave a great truthful answer!!! What I enjoy about these dealers here, just plain give it like it is!! Thanks for a great answer Dave!!

I'm sharing this because I haven't seen it mentioned yet. (and if it has, I apologize) I primarily try to hunt old sites that are iron laced from hell. Big, small, iron mineralization, you name it, it's typically present. With the XS and II, I always noticed that at some point, usually somewhere around mid-morning, the high conductive falses off of the iron would increase to a point that I noticed I virtually never made a good DEEP "technical" recovery after that until early the next day when the cycle seemed to start all over. I assume this phenomenon would "reset" or improve during the night sometime. Reducing the sensitivity on the XS and II would never rectify this significantly. (All the other detectors I have and have had do it also to varying degrees once I became aware of it) I've observed that the SE is much less prone to this and therefore I can still usually hear those deepies after that if and when they're present. I assume that when this "change" happens, the degree of iron masking increases to the point of resulting in less/no further finds. There's a couple of my hunting buddies that have observed this consistantly and it literally is like when you're fishing and you KNOW you might as well trailer the boat and go home from a probability of sucess standpoint based on your past experience. The SE definitely offers an improvement on this situation. How?,.... I have no clue, but the SE handles this better. Oh, and David, I haven't forgotten that I still owe you some feedback on the Groundhawk. I'll call you soon when I have some time. :)

When you say iron falses you mean the quick little beeps and blips you get when in trashy/iron infested ground such as a torn down old house? I have a few farms im able to hunt and most of them are really hard to detect with my EX II.
How does the SE sound off in the same areas?

Thanks, bart

Where the good stuff is. I usually run IM 16 cut the gain back to 5 and run the sen. anywhere I can get it to work at. Some days I can pull stuff and some days you just have to load the boat and go home. I wonder if it has to do with the Sun warming things up or solar activity or electrical interfearance or humitidy of the day. I think it has to do with solar activity and electrical interfearence of some kind. What kind of area in this place in. I am just interested as I know the Exp ll loses its depth in a electrical interfearence areas. What have you guys talked about that you think could be the problem. My Fishers work better then the Exp ll in areas like this though. Later bud, and Yes I think the SE is better too. Jerry aka Tinfoil.

I do seem to see that there is a correlation to the sun/heat cycle of the day. Humidity seems to enter into it also as most of the very best sucessful days I've had hunting in areas that have been hit hard for decades and still produce are in the early morning during the seasonal changes that cause foggy mornings. I know this is probably sounding very "Twilight Zone-ish" like, but I've SEEN it too many times for there not to be something to it. I too almost always have run my Explorers in iron mask -16 and now -32 and that's how I stumbled onto this in the first place.

a industrial area, in town or where is the areas or areas located. Any power Transformers power lines big air conditioners. That sort of thing. I forgot what State you are in also. HH Jerry aka Tinfoil

the reason I said the SE seems to be better is I've had the II and SE out at the same time and noticed the difference.

I totally Love my Explorer, but have had the priveledge of test driving one of the first SE's off the line. So far I am not convinced that it will out perform the older two models. True it looks better, but a 60 gramm difference in weight is minute, and so far it does not go any deeper. I was concerned when I seen the change in the coil, because how can you improve on a great coil? It is 1/2" smaller and lighter. Does this cause a loss in depth?? I have been running the two side by side to compare depths on targets. Like anyone, you can get a new machine and happen to go over a great find and dig it up. Would your old machine of any make had found that same item?? Who knows? I do know that if you have two detectors you can tell if one can hear it and the other not! I will know by Friday if I am going to switch or not. I will give a full report after that!
