Hi. In one of the other forums, it was suggested that this might be an old Foster PI unit. Does it look familiar? circa 1985

It certainly looks like the unit Eric made for Mel Fisher.
It's certainly not the "borrowed" design made by J.W.Fishers company.

Looks like an ELSEC, manufactured by Littlemore, in England. I helped introduce these to the U.S market thru Kellyco Metal detector dist.. A Super PI detector at the time, it opened up a whole new world for underwater treasure hunters.
White's later introduced the first PI manufactured in the U.S. Dell

...there was an issue of Skin Diver mag, with you on the cover, holding an Elsec. Correct?
 
Not Exactly! The photo with the Elsec was included with an article I wrote, and published by Skin Diver magazine. The cover was added above the photo to show which issue the article appeared in.
Actually the same article appeared in a variety of publications over the years. Skin Diver editor saw it and called me for permission to use it in their publication.
I hope you don't intend to purposely misconstrue this also. Dell

Hi Seth,
The ELSEC underwater metal detector was the first underwater PI to go into production. Type 700D shows that it was first produced in 1970 and was the fourth version. Field evaluation models were made and used for a year or so before this. It was first described in the August 1970 edition of Archaeometry, which is the bulletin of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, Oxford. The title of the article is
