Is this coin real?

I found this coin last year on the beach (sorry about the quality). What a surprise when I got it out of the scoop. Best coin I ever found.

Anyway a friend told me he thought it was a fake because of how it was discolored. Seems kinda odd that someone would fake this coin.

I'm not sure the best way to clean it or if I even should.

Any thoughts would be very helpful.
