Is this gold?

Hi All:
I have a question maybe someone can help with! This little ring shaped piece was an eye find it has a weight of 10 grains, is gold in color through out.
What has me wonding is that my 705 with the sensitivity on 27 in A.M mode will only pick it up within four inch's of the coil it rings in at 6 useing the stock 9" coil
It appears to be a link someone has cut off from a bracelet could this be gold?
I know the best thing is to have it tested.
Also why would the 705 only detect it at a four inch distance? When I did the air test to see what the TID reading would be I was inside my house so I had to
turn the sensitivity down a bit .Sorry about the pic but it is very gold in color.

Like you said...the only way to know for sure is to have it tested. It could be ringing up the way it is on your machine due to it not being a complete circle. If you have a strong magnet you can see if it sticks to it...if it does (not gold) if it does NOT stick to a strong magnet then it's more likely that it is gold but still get it tested hope this helps.

I hope that's gold but I have a feeling that it's not based on how the patina looks to me.

One other test that you can do is lightly rub it on a piece of white paper, then rub something else that you know is gold right along side of it and compare the marks left on the paper. If they are similar then I would get it tested.

On a 705 something of that shape and size even though it's cut should give you an ID around 38-42 if it's gold.

Well it is not a lock washer thats ware it was cut off at,It's non magnetic,There is no petina on it just looks that way in the pic,I'll keep it and get it tested sometime.
I rubbed it on a white piece of paper but it just left rub marks never heard of doing that before what is it suppose to do anyways? Thats interesting!

Most detectors dont respond to a open circle target as good as they do on a complete circle target. Take a cheap ring and cut it so it doesnt touch and then see how far you can detect it compared to how far you were able to detect it before you cut it. Hope this helps.

Some people do this on paper and others do it on ceramic. Ceramic is probably the better of the two tests. You need a piece of unfinished ceramic like the bottom edge of a coffee cup. If you rub what you think is gold on a piece of unfinished ceramic and it leaves a black mark then it's not real gold. If it leaves a gold mark then your chances are much better that it's gold. The only definitive ways to test gold is a chemical test. There are some other things you can do with water but it gets into some complicated calculations and measurements.

Unfortunately many people that host these gold parties find out that some of the stuff that people bought at the beach or small shops that they thought is real gold ends up being fake.
