it is only my second ever v-nickel I have ever dug, came out of a field where an old church once stood. Ground was semi froze, so i will return when I can dig easier, here is before and after cleaning it up

It sure excites me to see some old coins! I got to get out bad! :)
Is that an 1899?

Good digs ! That green stuff will pop off if you stick a pin or such into it a bunch of times. steve in so az

That's a really old V nickel! Congrats and hope you get some more goodies when the ground has thawed for digging! :) God Bless! Betty

Nice finds. You did good. That old church yard ought to have alot of coins around it. They used to have all of their picnics and church gatherings out in the yard, especially if it was a small church, which I assume it was. Can you tell where the church building actually stood? Keep us updated on what you find when you get out.

no I cannot tell where it was, the pastor told me it was tore down in 1964, so that was 45 years ago and he doesn't know the exact location. I will go back when the ground thaws some more

If you can locate some old maps of the area, maybe it will show the church. With it being torn down in 64, there should be some maps with the church on them. I am trying to map some of the area near our house. This used to be old farm land in the early 1900's. Alot of history surrounding Connersville. If I remember you live in northern Ohio. If I get some good old maps I will let you know. Maybe some can make it down here and do some digging together. A friend of my father in law (who passed away recently) loves to detect and he is a member of the local historical society. He is my sourch for alot of site info, and he can help me map the area.

how I clean nickels is like this:

mix a spoon of salt in 1/2 cup venegar, stir till it disolves, place nickel in this and swirl it around for 2-3 minutes, the red will start to come off fairly quick, remove it and rub baking soda on it, rinse, dry, and if i needs more, do the process over. Works on any nickels
