I kept reading everyone's advice on the Safari, "just keep practicing and you will learn it."
That's what I did, and I was starting to think it wouldn't happen; that I had spent a lot of money to pull clad coins and pull tabs from the ground. Until a few weeks ago, when I came across a weak signal that was repeating decently. It was coming in as an 18/19 and very deep. I figured probably aluminum, maybe a nickel, but I dug it anyway. When I found the object after digging down about 9-10 inches I thought it was a penny, until I felt the shank on the back. My first flat button! As I carefully brushed some of the dirt away I saw it had a design on it. There was an eagle with a shield containing a script R. Turns out it is a War of 1812 rifle regiment button. Made only from 1812-1813! A great find and one ill never forget. 20 minutes later, digging a solid 35 signal, and expecting another penny, I pulled out a giant copper flat button. I can't say exactly what happened, but something just "clicked" and I knew what signals to dig. I was finally learning the machine. I went on to dig several more flat buttons from the mid to late 1700's, two large musket balls, a smaller musket ball, and a three-ringer Minnie ball! My best finds ever with any detector. I finally am using the safari and pulling stuff that is very very old, and very deep! I hope to find out more about the other flat buttons. If anyone can give me some insight into them that would be awesome!
