It pays to check your change...

Sometimes you just have to check your change!! A few months ago I got an Indian Head cent in change at WalMart, today, bought a Coke, checked my change and found I had a silver dime, not too bad I thought, no problem getting a silver roosie the easy way, came home to check the date if this SILVER dime, you got it 1992-D and again, its silver!!! Someone is missing a dime out of thier proof set!!

n/t

has the weight of a silver dime, sounds like a silver dime and he said it was a silver dime...they made silver proof coins, but in San Fran, also NOT plated. believe it or not this is a silver dime!!

know when they stopped making silver dimes...this is silver, an error, a mistake, I've never heard of it before, not a S mint proof either...has me a little confused!

at least look at the edges of them for silver.. got a couple wheats just a couple weeks ago in one deal.Doesnt happen very often anymore. Can only imagine how yours got circulated..

Sort of makes one wonder where the rest of the proof silver set is. You know some kid probably opened it up and took it from his Dad or Grandpa's collection. Could even be part of a stolen collection, either way neat find. Pays to look but all I haver ever gotten is wheat's.

but the only thing I know is that its a 1992-D Silver Roosie, error, planchet mistake or whatever, have gone to a dealer, going to another who I know on Thursday, it has the same wieght in grams that a silver dime has, know its not plated, other than that, just something I've got to find out!

I'M not much of a collector nor do I know much about coins sooooo if it is some kinda ERROR coin you found a good one in circulation...CONGRATS :jump:

Hi Jack,

I'm not an expert on proof sets, just trying to rationalize your find. Did they make silver 1992-D proof sets? I'd find it highly unlikely that a silver planchet somehow got mixed in with the clad ones, though I guess you never know. Did you test the coin for silver, if that's possible? What about clad with the wrong metal in the middle? Could it be a counterfeit coin? I see you said that it has not been silver plated by someone - just wondering how you can determine this. Please keep us informed on your research - hopefully you've found a very valuable error.

The US Mint has sold silver proof sets since 1992. The half, quarter and dimes were indeed made of silver. Good catch!!

But not with a D mint mark. All the proof sets came from SanFrancisco Mint. (sorry meant this to go in first post)

...You could have used the edit function on your first post and added that second sentence to it. Try it next time.

http://chipmancoins.com/Silver_Proof_Sets.htm- If you go to this website it will show you the silver proof sets. Nice find

I found a silver quarter in my change several months ago. Then as I was demolishing my basement in the new house we bought (that was built in the 70's) I found another silver quarter on the floor. About a month ago I bought a Coke at work and got a silver dime in my change. Prior to that (I'm 44 now) I don't ever recall getting any silver in my change.

I find wheaties in my change every now and then and there still seems to be a number of older nickels out there in circulation.
