It pays to check your change...

money runs out before the next paycheck and in a panic, they spend whatever coins they've been collecting over the years. I can easily see an elderly person cracking open a proof set to buy groceries or whatever they may need. It's very sad in a way.

When I first got my Xterra 50 I did a post that I went detecting and came home with a 2 cent piece. The only thing I didn't find it with the detector but got it back from buying a 95 cent cup of coffee with a $1 :) The clerk thought it was a nickel but my eye sure caught it!

Maybe the D mint did silver commemorative coins and some silver happened to stay over during a changeover to regular coins. You never know. If it is a silver 1992D dime it is very valuable indeed.

Yeah, but you forgot to mention that this happened to you way back in 1865  Seriously though, nice find and first I ever heard of anyone finding a 2 center in change!!! - unfortunately some elderly coin collector whose eyesight was failing probably thought it was a modern nickel -- no way that'd been in circulation for that long!

This is another rarity in the same class as yours. Enjoy

The D mint sure have something to explain, what if there was a unfaithful worker at the mint trying to benefit from making his own rare coins.

If u look at the proof set on the same site u can see that the S mint made silver proof sets but not the D in 1992

First time the clerk behind the counter took it in change and yes, accepted it as two cents...then bought it from the register!

where he works and will weigh it, and from what he said will test it as well. So when I get it tomorrow I'll believe his results and then will send it to be certified!
