Another thing I am noticing with the LTD in the bp mode is it locks on slightly deeper nickels a little better then the regular F 75 does. 2 of the 5 nickels I dug today were 5 and 6" and read a solid 30 with a good clean high tone in 3h tones. Nickels deeper then about 4-5" with my regular F 75 were always a little bouncy vdi wise. HH jim tn

Yup, it's a bit slow now. I think I will post some VDI readings (air) for some samples I have, testing DE vs BP vs CL and 11" vs 5" DD. Except for gold, I've got a good assortment of old coin targets, the stuff I usually find.

John, I occasionally get one of those "off the wall" readings as well. If I take the time to check as to perhaps why, usually there is a piece of trash in the same dirt, or very nearby. The other day when I dug the 2 silver dimes along with wheats, a Memorial cent and a nickel all in the same hole, the vdi was a bit bouncy, but nothing down to 30. Hard to figure some time. Yep Jim here in Dekalb County the ground is so dang mineralized I am used to targets reading higher than they are supposed to. In my experience most signals near iron read higher VDI's when you come at the target from different angles but this buffalo was dead locked on 80 from every angle a came at it. After I dug the whole I looked for another target being that it was so solid I kinda figured I'd find a silver in the same hole but nothing.

My red clay in the Upstate of SC reads 0.03 most of the time, sometimes running up to 0.1.

We got a inch of the white stuff after midnight with the temps hoovering right at 30 and now dropping, going to a low of 8 tonight. High's the next two days are 19 and 20. I've been hunting with the temps. in the 20's and warming to 30 or so by mid afternoon, but highs of 19 or so will most definitely keep me off the turf those days. You guys and gals a little further north, I KNOW, I KNOW, but keep in mind, our average day time temps. here this time of the year are upper 40's and a couple of inches of snow pretty much shuts the area down. Most area schools, in fact, are closed today. Oh well, I could still be living in Mn...or Ohio!!! Lol, Elton. HH jim tn

Jim the ground is a clay mix here. FeO3 .01 most places milder soils .03 with a GB of 48-54 depending on the spot.
I sure am ready for some warmer weather here too. The ground is froze solid and I'm bored. Have done very little detecting for about 3 weeks. Threads like this one gives me something to do.

..... the other day on our High School football field, I thought I was digging another nickel...... hitting the TDI at 33, but bouncing between this and 31..... most often hitting the 33. It turned out to be a ladies 10k High School class ring at about 5 inches.

Good job on the ring find, SoArk. I've found several gold rings with my F 75 and as best as I can recall only 4 id'ed exactly as a nickel. The gold charms and earrings I have found all id'ed in the 20's and the mens wedding bands and class rings have come in in the 30's and to as high as 58. Unfortunately, I only dig 20's and higher then 30-31 readings when hunting in and around tot lots and ball fields, so on coin hunting sites, I am passing up some gold, for sure. HH jim tn

jimmyk, Just got back to my classroom from driving up and getting a little something for lunch...... it was 27 degrees showing on my truck's thermometer. It's supposed to get down to 11 here tonight...... coldest it's been in over a decade. We've seen a bit of snow flurries..... but nothing that has accumulated.

Jim, I know one thing..... that on that ballfield a quarter will lock in at 82-83, and a dime will hit at 72-73. In two days on that field, I dug 47 quarters and 37 dimes. The nickels were hitting at 30-33, with some deeper ones hitting in the upper 20's. And Pennies...... I haven't got them figured well just yet...... seems they ID anywhere from upper 50's to lower 70's...... I'm still working on them. LOL

Deeper nickels on my F 75 were always a little bouncy, too, but seemed to have a bit cleaner sound then those pesky 5" and more deep pull tabs. Its still, though, a nickel "hog." Your penny readings are about the norm and pennies will read differently do to alloy content changes over the years. I use 3h and 4h tones a lot for coin hunting and depending on the age of the site, just dig the high tones, which, throws the zinc Memorial cents (most 1982 and newer) to a mid tone. On older sites, though, I do dig the mid tones as IH cents and some other older types of coins come in with a mid tone. Anyway, HH jim tn

While dreaming of a thaw with snow predicted overnight, I should go grab the detector, the wife's rings and jewelry box; am just not finding the energy right now.

In late November or early December I did turn up a thin silver chain that ID'd at 17 and was a stable ID. Sized in pinpoint like a large nail or narrow strip of aluminum about the length of a can but definitely did not act like a flattened can on it's side. Was about 2 inches down.

Will need to get out the jewelry and test it though.
