Finally ran into a big silver this morning, a 42 Walker. Hadn't hit a big one for a while.
Went to the spot we dug some period lead on earlier this week trying for an old coin or two. Kind of moved around some trying to hit a spot of ground that held a wheat cent for a indicator that some silver might also be in the area. Never did run into a wheatie, but about a hour into the hunt I did un-earth a 45 Merc. from about 5" deep. Worked the patch of ground around it for a while but nothing but Memorials and clad showed up. From another area I recovered the rather ornate piece, of which, remains a "whats it." It does have a patent number on the back so I may be able to track down what it went with. Kinda guessing maybe a auto. I was about to call it a wrap and working my way towards my Ford Edge when I spotted depression in the ground that had once harbored a big old tree. I usually work the area around any depression as people may have congregated under the removed tree in years past. About four feet out on one side of the depression I got a good bang with a nice 91-92 reading showing 6." Removed a 5" deep plug and thought I saw the wide edge of a silver coin down in and off to the side of the hole a little. Removed it and a clump dirt and broke the clump open with my Pin Pointer and became the proud digger of a Walker half dollar.
A few days earlier I had recovered another 54 Rosie from the same spot and the next day at our old fairgrounds got the blackend 23 Mercury.The last 54 Rosie makes 3 1954's I have recovered since last Sat. Was still using the 5" coil and nothing tricky with settings on my 75. Now, my son and I are off to do some fishing. HH jim tn
