Jewelry box top?

Hey folks... My father and I were out detecting in California's gold country and came across this metal plate. It says "BRIGHTON" in the middle. At first, I thought it was a machinery piece, but then I noticed the designs on the corners. The upper left design is easily seen in the pic. Any ideas? Thanks!

Are you sure that says Brighton? By the picture is doesn't look like Brighton. I really want to figure this one out. It is a cool find.

It remind me of a cleanout door on an old cast iron wood burning stove.

I believe it may be a mail slot. Still researching.... Oh the struggle! HAHA

Wood stoves too.. Could be either .............. But most mail box lids say Mail on them..

Most wood stoves has the company name on the lids etc.
