Joey coil over the Platapus

grumpy

New member
Can anyone tell me a comparison between the 5 by 10 Joey and the 8.5 by ll.5 platapus coils on the Ex ?? We have the Joey and really like it thought the Plat. might work the same but just a tad better and thought someone here might have compared.
Also does anyone know if the Plat is waterproof or not??
Thanks for the help
Grumpy

Hi Grumpy,the Platypus is waterproof, I don't have one
so I'm not sure about how it rates against the Joey...

The Platypus pivots from the center so would be nicely balanced,
it is longer/wider so I guess would put down a bigger field,
therefore may not be as sensitive to some of the smaller stuff we seek.

I look forward to hearing more from people who have used it too!

Grumpy,
Wire Chief said this about the Platypus a while back in answer to a post by Ben...

"Hello Ben, I am using the Platypus on the Quattro and must say I like it.
It is very sensitive and has good depth. I like it better than the stock coil myself."

I hope this was helpful,
the Quattro is similar electronically to the Explorer...
I'm guessing that what Wire Chief found with his Quattro and the Platypus
would be similar to what you would expect with your Explorer.

Thanks Snowy;
Think I will order one next week and give it a try. Seems the Joey is a very good coil and I like Elip coils , mind thing I guess so the bigger Plat should fit in the area of being just a bit bigger than the stock coil with a hopefully better pattern to it. Will keep you posted what I find out.

have both and have put them through the paces...the joey is great for tight woods work...not quite as deep as the platy and it does false some when hit against brush/stump...but you can hunt with it all day without your shoulder falling off

Pullatab;
I have the Joey and do thank you for the feedback on the plat. I take it you think the plat does less falsing? also as well as a bit deeper?
We have noticed the Joey works quite well but if you bump the little guy or push it to the ground with any motion not slow and steady it will false. This is one of the other reasons for looking into the plat.
Does the plat seem to seperate good like the Joey for you?
Good Luck and Thanks for the help
Grumpy

The Joey coil IS NOT waterproof. The Platypus coil is waterproof. Don't know your settings, but the Platypus will cover more ground faster.
