Joey vs Platipus your experience Please ! :help:

Hi Buzzz,

I asked pretty much the same question about a week or so ago and didn`t get too much feedback, hope you do better because I`m still interested.

After searching all the threads and posts related to both coils I decided that I wanted a Joey first. Luckily for me I got a great deal on one through the classifieds here.

Where in the southern tier of NY are you? Maybe you are close enough for us to get together and compare coils if you end up with a Platypus.

Russ

Both coils are great but if you want something different go with a smaller one. The Platy is not a lot different than the standard coil compared to the Joey. One of my favorite coils is the Sun Ray Stealth 8 - super separation and great depth, lightweight. It is the coil I use most.

Well, it depends on what you want it for... The Joey is smaller, lighter weight , and maybe better in trash.. However I am using the Platypus more and more.. It is really pretty darn good in iron, I think even more so than the stock while getting even a bit more front to back coverage, and as much depth as the stock.. Downside being its every bit as heavy.. though maybe a bit better balanced.. The Joey you can swing all day.. Now all that being said I have problems with my joey coil again.. this is my third one and now I am afraid this one has bit the dust also, just going crazy and not working at all... I thought it was just the wet conditions I used it in last, but over a week later and its still doing it.. Dont know if its the construction or lack of epoxy to hold the wires together inside or what, but I would be willing to take a little more weight to make it more hardy thats for sure... Funny thing is I dont see any other posts about people having this problem with theirs, but its quite a coincidence its happened to all three of mine.. I can say that Doc has been very good about replacing my previous two Joeys, even after the waranty.. I doubt I will get another just because I cant chance having a coil go out on me when I am a mile or two from the car with no spare coil

I respect your input and agree DOC is a nice person to deal with. On the Joey issue, seems like I read here on the Forum, that there is some kind of sealant or seal to keep moisture out of the Joey. DOC supplied a couple members this sealant or seal. I know you detect in the rain so, it kinda makes sense.............Anyway, Keep your Coil to the Soil even in the rain :)
Thanks for the info !!!!!!!!!

Have you had any problems with your Joey Coil ????? I like my WOT the most but hate the weight of it, thats the reason for considering the Joey or Platy when I get tired out !!!!!! Thanks for your input.
Happy Hunting !!!!!!!!

The Joey I had was light and well balanced. What I didn't like is when used in grass with dew it would start falsing. As far as depth, it was good. I sold it and bought a WOT. The WOT I liked, but could not swing it long because my arm went numb. Too heavy. I sold it when the Platypus coil came out. Now I use the Platypus. It is tough, has great depth, and the one I use in place of the stock. I did lighten it up by discarding the coil cover, next, I sanded about 1/8" off the bottom and applyed a 2 part marine epoxy for scratch protection. I can swing it all day now with great coverage and depth. My vote is for the Platypus.

I had the Joey and the Sun Ray Stealth 8 at the same time - The Sun Ray won out because it was more stable at higher sens. No real proof but I think the SR goes deeper. The Joey worked great in high trash. I sold mine to a friend and he sold it too (we both still have our SR 8's though).

My hunting buddy Neal has both and was telling me some of the comparisons but I forget now what he said. I know that the ML is heavier and a tad smaller than the SR8. Maybe Neal will fill you in.

Hi Buzzz,

You`re not more than a few hours from me, we could probably work something out to try the Joey and Platy side by side. I`ve also got an X-5 coming for comparison.

Russ

The 3 coils I use are the Platupus, the Joey and the 5 inch coil. This covers all my need for my hunting. The Platupus feels lighter then the stock coil even though it isnt, but feel it is just better balanced. The depth is great and I have seen it get a better signal than the stock coil because of the trash. The Joey is the one I seem to use the most as it just has a very nice feel to it and can get into most anyplace I want to go. The depth has been decent and I have never had a problem in wet grass like many do and dont know why.None of the other guys around here has notice any real problem in wet grass either, could be it is not real wet. The 5 inch coil is used in the super trashy sites, but it is like swinging a hockey puck and not much ground coverage, but it sure does seperates the target.
I havent use the stock coil since I got the Platupus.

I`ve been reading alot of positive press about the Sunray X-8. Would you say that the X-8 is a good substitute for the stock 10.5" coil? Is it appreciably better than the stock coil in anyway? I hear that if balances better, thus feels lighter.

Thanks, Russ

The SR 8" coil works very well in the type of hunting I do. It separates targets much better in trashy ground. It also only weighs a fraction of what the stock coil weighs. It has good depth for an 8" coil. I think I can get a penny with it at 9". Those are the benefits.

The Stock coil still wins on depth and is no slouch on separation in trash, it is a bit heavy when you aren't finding much though.

Hope this helps, tell Ralph at SR that you talked to me.
