John or other cold weather hunters.

I meant to ask this yesterday in my post about my finds for the day but I forgot. I had a great 3 hour hunt. It was around 37F out and the first two hours were target rich. Dug tons of targets and a nice mix for the first two hours. The last hour was slim pickings even hardly any junk. In fact I think my last hour consisted of 6 or 8 quarters and a dime and 2-3 pop tops. I wondered why. I was careful to keep my technique consistent. I think I was. What I'm getting at is maybe I was just tired. My second explanation is that my 2500 was acting up in the cold. All it seemed to register on was big targets like quarters. Battery meter was full. I know John puts heating pads on his detector but I never really asked why.

At 37 degrees I don't see where the cold would have any effect on the electronics. John uses warmers because he hunts in temperatures near absolute zero!

I just read an article that said that around 32F the performance of NiCads decreases. I bet you're right though and it was my performance that was degrading.

I was lucky to get out. I woke up with dreams of detecting and awoke a blanket of 3-4 inches of snow.

I woke up today ready to hunt this afternoon. Then my wife reminds me to fix the closet shelving that fell off the wall 2 weeks ago. Now I have to go to Home Depot and spend money! It's sunny and going to be 40 degrees.

It could have been the cold on the electronics. I noticed on the GTA 500 many years back that hunting in the cold wore out my batteries quicker, and the machine was a little lax on hitting targets. My guess is either it was the cold, or maybe there just weren't the good targets remaining anymore.

I hunted this area for 3 solid hours so I had definitely thinned out the targets. What was weird was that I found such a high percentage of quarters during the last hour. I was pretty cold when I got home so I imagine my 2500 was too. When I go back I'll have an idea of what I left behind.

I read an article about NiCads in cold weather. It said that around 32F that the batteries performance begins to suffer. Can't deliver the amperage.

How close are you to 200,000 coins? I'm around 7700 from 25k.
