i thought it would be funny to walk into my local park ,dressed the part.I had a hard hat on a tool belt filled with all knid of over sized tools a pick axe and a shovel my friend was carrying and being loud like we were discovering pirate loot.We were just fooling around and being funny with our kids who we had hit the tot lots with there beach sand bucket and plastic shovels! The locals didnt think we were funny and we tried to explain to them we were just trying to pretend we were the american diggers, they didnt understand and the cops who were near by just said no digging in the park! and i dug there before with no problem, lot a people detect this park,i hope i didnt ruin there chance!

DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!!!----You just set this hobby back on its heels & done more damage than you can ever imagine.------Thanks SO MUCH for doing MORE than your share in getting parks closed off for the rest of us.-----The last thing any of us need to do is give those against detecting MORE "ammunition" to close down places/sites.-------Sorry, I don't see any humor in it & STUPID acts like this IS costing this great hobby dearly.---------Del

Wonderful Nick---I love kids to & they ARE priceless.-----Just have fun with them in a way that isn't costing this hobby.-----We have some forces working against us anymore at this day & age that we never had even a few years ago (including a couple of those T.V. shows).------You may be new to this hobby & just don't realize the consequences but I can tell you---if we don't ALL do our part to give this great hobby a favorable image (as much as possible) to the general public, we aren't going to have a hobby.-------If you doubt that, talk to some of the guys that have had their parks/hunt sites closed down to detecting in their area(s)--mostly because of the acts of a thoughtless few.-----------Del

Don't be surprised when you go back there to metal detect, that you are asked to leave.

That style of detecting, for REAL! or for play attracts to much BAD attention in public places like parks and sports fields.

Maybe detecting forums should put up MUST READ FIRST Q.A. quiz before they can become forum members.

Critical thinking, an important skill.......

Never get so wrapped up in your self that you forget how you may be looking to others who don't know what's really up. There's a world full of whacko's out there. Try not to look like them. If you don't believe me. Try streaming your local police departments radio for a few evenings.

As long as you had fun, we will pay for it.

Thanks so much,

Ron in WV

DID you have detectors with you ????

May have been a joke at the time.Bet it isn't funny when you try detecting there next time and your not allowed,

To each his own........... At least the kids enjoyed it.. Hope all works out well for you.

People think this issue with American Diggers and others is a joke and will have no effect on detecting. Some say we are over reacting.. Time will tell..... I hope people do not think of me like I thought of those idiots when it was televised.......

TV isn't real..let us all hope the general public can see that too..

The good new is that you don't live near me. You don't do you?

Another "joke" that probably will back fire is a YouTube video of a guy detecting his neighbor's yard with a shovel and digging big holes. His neighbor was in the hostital for a few days and he was "joking" (?) that she'd never know he was there tearing up her yard. He even made other remarks I think like filling in "most" of his holes. Whether that guy was making a joke or not, it's still a very bad image for our hobby to the general public.

I find it interesting. 2 things stand out to me:

1) you say: "i dug there before with no problem, lot a people detect this park". This tells me that the park is not closed to detecting and (gasp) digging your coins in the past. However:

2) you were obviously STICKING OUT, goofing off, with big shovels, axes, etc.... Notice how EVEN DESPITE the truth of #1 above, that now, all of the sudden, you get the scrutiny. Even so far as someone saying "no digging", etc...

What does this tell us about the hobby?? STOP STICKING OUT. doh! I say a lot of times for people to "be discreet" (ie.; pick low traffic times, avoid busy-bodies who aim to make connotations, etc...). And your post (although you didn't mean for it to end this way) perfectly illustrates how there's a lot of parks where ...... in practice, .... you can detect, and go un-bothered. But if you make yourself a big enough target: presto, new scrutiny, rules, etc.... Moral of the story??

That's why I leave my backhoe at home these days. People get the wrong ideas. lol I'm just joking, no hate mail please.

One can only hope !!

This isn't as bad as the Tot-Lot hunter pulling up all the landscaping fabric from under the mulch because it kept getting in his way and got ran off, but near it.

He has to be made to realize the seriousness of his actions. If it means hurting his pride because a bunch of people jumped on him, then so be it. It would be nice MORE hunters, especially those putting themselves on TV cared more about the hobby as a whole, and not just themselves.
