Just a simple observation - those whispers you hear about

I've been tinkering around with Audio Response (AR) settings--in the past few months I've kept AR at 5 so I wouldn't miss the deep targets when I swung over them. Yesterday I changed the setting to 3 and swung the whole day with it. I quickly realized what I had been missing from my early Deus days--the audio contrast between deep and shallow targets. With AR at 5, a 5-6 inch target sounded very very similar to a 3-4 inch target in terms of depth. While both high versus low AR settings will allow you to find the deep targets, I find hearing the contrast gives me another decision variable to work with when on the hunt for the oldies--it's definitely more appealing. I also noticed that turning down the AR has the added benefit of somewhat taming the EMI chatter when present. I'm not too concerned about missing the whispers of targets beyond 6 inches because I turned my headphone volume up a notch so those whispers can come through too.

I see a big difference in Audio response of 3 vs 5...most notably on coin-sized targets below 5 inches or so. It's easier for me to identify deep targets over the chatter in the higher AR settings, as a lot of sites I detect are plagued with EMI. 12 khz is not too affected by EMI, not like 4K and 8K, and I will start to use 18khz pending the results of some thorough in-ground tests. Have been waiting on a good camera to film the audio component of deep targets - there will be a whopper of a video once I'm finished!!!

Long story short, if you have a site with little to no EMI - raise the AR to 5. Shallow targets will seem "larger" while deeper targets will become easier to pick out of the background

I also like 5. I don't care about modulated tone when it comes to detecting. Have found too many good coins shallow with deus on ground that's been pounded by White's V3i, etrac, CTX and F75se. I can't dig what I can't hear. The fewer whipsers the better for me and yes even with AR at 5 you can still get whisper on deep target. This is relative to your reactivity and silencer settings of course. Your coil size will also play into the mix. The 11" coil sure makes the targets sound off better than 9" coil IMO especially when they are over 6" deep.

Interesting post to read guys. Thank you
