Being a hard core Explorer guy, I broke down and got a C$ late last fall, just had to try it. I got out a few times, didn't find much,"lots of clad" nothing deep though. I know each machine has a learning curve so I've stuck with it. Saturday warmed up enough to get out for the first real hunt of the year. Armed with the XS and the C$, I was set. Using the XS I found a no date slick seated dime at about 8", sounded solid, then I found a deep 1874 Indian in good shape and several early teen wheats. Well I was satisfied I found a few good coins the day was good so I switched to the C$. Lots a clad later with great lock ons, My buddy started ribbing me I hadn't found anymore old coins, by now he had 1 Barber dime, a merc, 6 indians and several wheats. I told him next couple deep signals I wanted to listen in. In a short time he said "here's a deep squeely", he knew it was silver. The C$ set at Sens 8, Thresh,0 I heard it loud and clear, my depth said around 10", the explorer did too. My signal was bouncing between +18 to +22. It was a nice Barber dime around 10". A few minutes later he had another signal, he asked what I thought it was, signals bounced between +16 to +20, solid, about the same depth, I guessed an Indian, it was an 189? Indian at about 7"-8". I knew the signals dropped but this more than I expected, but a lesson learned. It was getting dark so we left. I'm looking forward to getting back out with the C$, I think I might have to get the 10" coil. If the 8" heard what the Explorer was hearing with the 10", I wonder how deep the C$ will go? I sure did miss the SunRay probe though, come on Ralph we need one for the C$.

Hi DirtDog
I have put alot of hours in on the XS and liked it alot, its a great machine. I wanted to try the C$ because of its reputation for hunting trashy areas and I have been happy with its performance.
The C$ does take about 40 hours of use to understand how to fine tune it, to the soil you are hunting in. I found that by using a moderate sweep speed, running sens as high as ground conditions will allow, and setting thresh as close to 0 as possible, the C$ is one serious detector. It is one of the fastest target id detectors that I have used. I lined up a group of targets on top of the ground and swept the C$ accross them at moderate to fast speed, and it id'ed them. Another thing that I noticed is that the C$ numbers will id targets deeper then the pin pointer can pick them up, in other words if you are sweeping the coil over the ground and you get numbers, but no tone, the target is around 12" deep. I agree about the sweep speed. That's one of the hardest things for me to be aware of. After 4 years with the XS it's hard to speed the swing up. I noticed if you go too slow with the C$ your hits won't ID correctly. Things are getting better for me, I have around 20-25 hours on the C$ and things are starting to click

Last weekend I found a 1887 silver dollar at an old home site, that had some of the worst trash that I have ever hunted. It was so bad that I notched everything out, and ran iron disc at 99. The site also had high minerialization so I ran with auto trac on until I hit a target then I turned auto trac off so it would not trac the target out, this little trick worked great.
The C$'s two number digit screen takes some time to get used to, especialy if you have been using smartfind's cross hairs, learn and edit programs on an XS. One thing that I have noticed about the C$ is the thresh settings has a direct effect on the target id speed, the closer that you are to +4 the faster the id speed "more excitable" as the numbers decrease into the high minus figures, the length of time it takes to id a target increases; however I don't think that there is much difference between 0 and +4 except threshold hum.
