Picked this little jewel up last Spring with the Explorer-II.

1909-S wheat back is a semi key date.
 
Nice Wheatie. I have yet to find one with a mint mark on it myself. It looks like it came out of the ground with very little build-up on it. Keep up the excellent finds.
 
Nice pic! Geez, that came out of the ground pretty clean... I dug a bunch in my backyard but they sure didn't look like that :)
 
Gerry, have you checked the back? If not, look at the very bottom of the coin, between the wheat ears. If it has a VDB back there (initials of the designer), you have about an $800 coin.

Check it out and let us know.

That particular one is just the standard 1909-S without VDB.

BUT..I did find an 09-S VDB about 10 years ago here in Boise 6 blocks from my house.

It grades Fine+ but is still one of my all time top 10 favorite coin finds.

Great finds!!

I didn't know there were that many key coins out there in Idaho! I may have to take a trip from Mass!

As far as cleaning coins, I can usually identify a coin of value by date/mm right away, and if I know I have anything of value, I pop it into my olive oil container while I'm hunting, just to protect it a bit, then when I get it home, I just run it under the hottest water I can for a while to remove the oil, dirt, etc. I used to have a coin business and I met so many dealers who would just toss coins back and say- Oh that's been cleaned. If you clean that 96-S dime, a dealer would give you next to nothing for it.

The only place I know of that professionally cleans coin like that is NCS (Numismatic Conservation Services). You can find them at www.ncscoin.com
They're expensive, but they'd professionally clean and encapsulate & grade your coin. Check them out.

In the meantime, keep finding those beauties!!
