Just Bought a new SE

I have only been detecting for about a month now, started out with a whites prism 2 found plenty of clad with that, then two days ago bought the SE, I have the machine setup with the iron mask on and up to 18, I do not have any of the other settings set as of yet, I have found more clad with it, I am digging everything because I am learning the machine, I am afraid to set any of the other settings because I do not want to lose depth, I bought the machine because I love old coins and I am sure everyone on here does or they would have bought a clad machine instead of the SE, or explorer 2, I really could use a few pointers on what to set this thing at, I am sure you guys hear this from every newbe, but any help would be greatly appretiated, I know this is a wonderful machine I just wish I was as wonderful at using it lol, I will get there hope you can help me on my way.

For the first few weeks I'd leave it just where you have it. The best advice I think any of us can give is to go ssslllooowwwwww and just dig what sounds and looks good to you on the screen...but definately go by the tones you hear first...then use the screen to help you decide. There is no shortcut but you can deinately find silver with the preset factory settings. The learning curve can become more difficult if a new user tries to change too many settings before they familiarize themselves with what the machine is trying to tell them

I think you can tweak your settings a little:

Lower your threshold volume down until you can barely hear it. It comes factory set at 16. At least lower it to 10 or 11.

Raise you volume up until it's comfortable. Most people raise it to the MAX and use the volume control knobs on their headphones to adjust it to their liking.

Gain comes factory set at 8 on the SE. In my opinion that is too high for someone just learning the Explorer. Unless you're hard of hearing lower your GAIN to at least 6 and no lower than 5. Now you'll get an idea how a deeper target sounds.

Sensitivity comes factory set at semi-automatic 22. You can bump that up to 25 with no problems.

Keep everything else the same until you learn the tones, the numbers or the position of the cross hairs on your screen. Always go my tone first and then double check with the screen.

AHHHAHHHAAAHAAAAhhhhahaha ahaha hah ha ! Sorry just a small rant. I finally got past the stage of wanting to throw my SE down a big cliff. For a while though, I can honestly tell you I was VERY frustrated!! It's much better now. Definetly, leave the settings to close to stock, I'm still doing that. Although do take into account I am in no way qualified to offer ANY advice, I'm still cutting my teeth. This machine has to be very capable based on all the glorious things people say about it. However, sometimes I wonder if I will ever be as good as these other people. I can find coins at 5" or so but I'm not too good pulling up deep coins and when I don't get a clear signal many times I'll just wave the coil back and forth for 10 minutes trying to decide whether to dig or not. If I would spend half as much time digging as I do analyzing I would probably have a lot more finds by now.

Thank you guys for your help, I actually pulled my first wheatie up from about 9 inches deep 1919 wheat penny I know it's not silver but for me it's exciting because it was actually deeper than five inches and I found it, plus it's my first wheat coin now just need to get my first piece of silver.

Great job joesch. 9" that's impressive. I'm not much good for about 5" or so and I get lost in the tones!
