Just curious...has the price of gas been a serious consideration as to whether you will detect or not...

Pete in MI

New member
with gas prices just hitting $4.20 in upper lower Michigan yesterday I wonder just how far I will travel to detect.

I try to combine trips to make traveling worth going anywhere. Will the cost of gas or has the cost of gas caused you to think twice about going out detecting just to detect...or are you now thinking more of 'combining trips' like shopping and then detecting in the area to save gas?

Anyone cancelling their usual Memorial Day trips up to their cottage or elsewhere and staying closer to home?

Hi All,

It hasn't affected my detecting (haven't made it out of my yard yet) but it has affected our going. We are combining trips. Denny (hubby) is taking therapy and we go to town 3 times a week anyway. So we don't make special trips to town on other days. Haven't been able to get out and do much detecting lately, but have been lurking and reading all the posts. So keep on posting!!! I really enjoy them.

chip away at something to fill that one! May have to take on more piano students...

Well yes and no. I still have to travel a way to get to some prime hunting spots and at the moment I do it. BUT, my boat with a 110 gallon gas tank will probably be idle this year. I might get it out once or twice but it probably will not be any more than that. Kind of sad.

It only gets 1.2 miles per gallon.

Haven't been :detecting: for quite a while anyway, so won't affect me, but when I did go I hunted close to home, soooo never used a lot of gas! Could walk to my special hunting place if I wanted to.....but I drive around to the parking lot so I don't have to carry my detector, shovel and etc. Like I told Cliff it won't be long until only those who have plenty of money will be able to travel like it was in the 20's & 30's. I've combined trips for many years because of living alone and too many expenses, for we need to use godly wisdom as God provides our needs! :)

God Bless!

Sherry and I decided when the Direct tv run out June 17 we will not continue the service. Its $55 a month. We decided the church could use that $55 a month more than the satellite company...besides, we're NOT going to buy a new tv because the government mandates it and besides all there is most of the time is trash anyway. Our savings will be in the electricity not used. We will keep the dvd player and vhs player and tv unplugged until we go to the library and get a video we want to watch.

Isn't the 20s and 30s when the gangsters took over, there were the Tommy Guns and lots of bank robberies???

I'm going diggin, just not too far. making less trips, and staying closer to home. :(

Yes, Pete, those were the years of the speakeasies and gangsters, but remember the nice cars they had back then (seen on TV and in movies)? They were fancy and only the rich people could buy them, or the gangsters would steal them! They had the dustbowl out West and people were very poor and very difficult to find jobs! Dad was one of them and had very hard times! The richer folks went to see Yellowstone Park, the Grand Canyon and Yosemitie, for they could afford to go and stay in the log lodges and cabins! Poorer people, like the farmers, never were able to go nor buy cars to travel in! Very different times back then, which looks like it might be again....but they use different guns now adays to get what they want without working for the money! Homeowners are losing their homes to foreclosure and soon there will be lots of people without jobs, homes, food, cars and etc.

Hard times are coming, so we need to get and be ready for it, or for Jesus to come and take us Home with Him! I guess you could bring up the history of those times and see what went on and how difficult it was to stay above the floods which were about to overcome the poor people and more of them than those who were rich! Look up the 1928 Stock Market Crash and about the Depression....no jobs, no place to stay and old jalopys to haul what little personal possesions they had!

God Bless!

Yes my main hunting partner lives 65 miles away and we will go on fewer hunts.Iam still able to look in the general area.

Betty the only reason (besides God) we got out of the depression was World War II and then projects such as the CCC (Conservation Corp) projects started by one of our better Presidents.

Sure looks like this nation or most of the states (like Michigan) are going to see those depression conditions again. I went to the Township Offices and talked to them. I made a suggestion...to set aside some of the Township owned property for those who live permanently in the Township year round to give out plots of land for gardening...victory gardens if you will. They thought that was a good idea. So the ball is in there court.

Our neighbor has a garden and he has so far just given away all the extra tomatoes and other vegetables. He has had more than the few of us on this street can now use and has even put stuff into a milk crate on top of a drum with a FREE sign so passerbys could come help themselves too.

Those old cars...at least with bailing wire and gum they could be fixed  unlike the technological nightmares we have now that no one can work on without even more technology to just see what might be wrong with it...not fix it just see if they can figure out what is rong sheeez.

God have mercy on His children, all those He has called to be His children and those who know Him not who are suffering spare them too Lord. In Jesus name. Amen.

lucky for me I have millions of dollars. As a matter of fact I work my 50 hour a week job just for the fun of it not the money. If you find yourself feeling the pinch I could send you a simi truck full of gas to your place just to help you out Pete.
Anyone else need any free money?
Baaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha
Yesteday was my 1st trip to work riding my bike

it's in St. Louis...over 2 hours away. I'm lucky if I get to meet and hunt with them 2 or 3 times each year...and that's when gas was only $2.50. Now.....
