Just got F4 newbie question

I just purchased an F4. After doing the quick air test, I went outside to my backyard to see if I could find anything. In all metal disc mode, the detector would jump all over the place from 05 to 100. Then I went to pinpoint. I stopped at the loudest signal and dug. After many times I didn't find one metal object. Not even a screw cap. I then buried a nickel about 5 inches down. When scanning the area, it picked up the nickel. However, when I went to pinpoint mode it did not go off at all. Being new, I am assuming I am doing something wrong. I am in California and the soil is rain soaked clay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!

Pinpoint mode can be a tricky thing to use if your holding the button down over the object your trying to find. move the coil away from the target, then press and hold the pinpoint button down and sweep the coil over the area, it will then see / find the object. There is a "sweet spot" on the 11" coil in the center. If you look close you will see a round dot, this is that "sweet spot", when the F4's audio is at it's loudest, the object will be under that dot known as the "sweet spot".

Are you hitting pin point over the target or hitting the button and the swinging it over the target? You have to start pinpoint away from the target.

Don't be discouraged the first 2 or 3 hours can be frustrating.

Try using a little discrimination, just the first two sections which are iron. Swing the coil very level to the ground. When you get a signal, turn 90 degrees and swing it again. If you get the same signal plan to dig. Move your coil a foot away from the spot and press pinpoint, (you don't need to hold it down). Now move the coil over the spot that gave the signal, very slowly. Pinpoint does not need motion. Once you hear pinpoint sounding off, move the coil an inch or so left and right, very slowly, once it is loudest, again turn 90 degrees and do the same thing. The screen will be showing depth, once you get the # as low as it will go, the item is directly under the round spot that is marked on the coil. It is about 2 inches in front of the shaft.

The F4 is a very nice little machine.I couldnt explain pinpointing any better then those gentleman have done, but it sounds like you may be in an area with alot of emi,try different areas, and as suggested start out slow, mid disk, low sens.take your time, and most importantly dont give up!!!! Oh and by the way welcome to the forum.you will find some great people and info here..hh rick in mi.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I don't own a F4 but a friend of mine got a new one for Christmas and I have been helping him get started. I don't have the unit here so I am going from memory. My friend was out for dinner and training last week. We went through the manual and tried to make it do everything that it should. Then I told him when he gets home to work on the basics like setting the Disk and for him he wanted to run just below nickles. Then work on ground balancing. I told him if he could get that much worked out then work on the next step pin pointing. At that point he would be ready for little hunting. I think the guys have already give you some good advice on pinpointing, so I won't go there.
Bottom line take it in small steps and pretty soon it will fit like an old shoe.

Good luck,

I may have been swinging too much. I will plant the nickel and try again :) I had the sensitivity down to 2 bars. My back yard has a lot of electrical wires above. In areas with a lot of electric wires etc. Would a 4' be better? I'm thinking of buying one since the price is reasonable. BTW. Thanks for all the help. I haven't detected since I was 10 years old with an old Radio shack detector. Thanks again!

No rush on the little coil, but once you get the hang of what you got I would say for sure yes. I love my little coils, I have one for each of my detectors. I think you can also get an 8" round coil (comes std on the F2) you may like that one as well. My brother has the F2 and he loves it.

to one side. Throw it upside down in your yard and practice pin pointing it. Then have you wife tape them on in weird stops and try it again. This way you can't cheat by knowing where it's taped at on the coardboard! Hope this helps!

Just purchases a fisher F4 form Gold Rush Trading Post For $399.00 comes with the 11" coil, 8" coil and the 4" coil and an extra lower shaft. Can't beat this price and it comes out of Oregon with no tax.
