Just got my 1500 and I have some questions

How accurate is the 1500 with air tests? My air tests show that it reads a quarter and a nickle accurately. But a dime reads as a penny and a penny reads a notch below penny. Also, with sensitivity set at 7 it detects a quarter only out to about 4 inches. I'm just trying to determine if I just got a lemon or not.

well nimrod i gotta say one thing first you have one of the best detectors made. i know i owned a gti 1500 and traded it for a gti 2500 which is a awesome detector too  well heres my view on air tests there "unreliable" in the real soil you have many aspects that affect the over all ability for your detector too read whats in the ground such as mineralized ground, masking, damp soil, dry soil ect so as far as air testing goes i dont waste my time doing it i get out there and detect too find out how different coins detect at different depthes and in different soils but thats just my own view .

Nimmy my dear bud air tests are not an accurate determination of a detectors performance Nobody detects in the air. Some detectors will perform better in air tests than in the ground and some will perform vice versa.. If you want to air test it for total air depth put it in zero discrimination and crank the sensitivity to the max. In the real world this is a pretty deep seeking detector. I find quarters at ten inches in bark chips with it. Air tests just give a general idea how your detector might perform under ideal conditions. Do you have a new one with the PROformance coil or an older model with the Scorcher coil

When you start hunting start out in coins mode and set your sensitivity at about 6 or 6.5 and use it at that level for awhile then you can crank it up as ground conditions allow. Remember, the sensitivity control is not a depth control. Increasing it does not drive the signal deeper into the ground as is widely believed. It just makes the coil more sensitive to the target you hope to find but it also makes it more sensitive to every piece of junk that was ever lost and to any mineralization in the ground. Run it too high and you can mask and lose some good targets.

It is programmed for copper cents so the modern zincers will read slightly below cents as will Indian Heads. Same with dimes. A silver dime will read right on but a clad will read otherwise because it contains a lot of copper. No ID on any detector made is 100% accurate. They give probable readings not actual readings. If you have any problems you know where to come.

I'm been thinking about upgrading and just wondering if it's worth it. I would like for my detector to be a little more stable.

Nimrod, I've never been very good at putting my thoughts into words. So, will just say, everything that Sasquache and Uncle Willy said is "rite-on". I've had my 1500 about 2 years now and have no desire to change to another model or brand.

I live in England & have had 2 1500's & 1 2500...i found the 1500 to be probably the most accurate machine ever used regarding the true depth & recognition of any target, especially its purposely addapted coin shooting skills & a good depth machine too....its bigger brother the 2500 is in my opinion over rated regarding the extras inc such as the treasure talk...no need & a dissapointing addition from garrett who i think could have spent the time & $$'s developing a practical feature...although great & lives up to its reputation for depth (unsurpassed in my opinion) it is uneccessarily weighty & i found the power coiled battery pack soon becomes stretched & also has a tendancy to come loose at times leaving it stretched & cumbersome over the duration...i found the British

One of the merits of the PROformance is much better stability. Doesn't false a lot like the Scorcher plus it's practically indestructible.

Yeah Nimmy, you've got the best coinshooter on the market as that is what it was specifically designed for. Learn all it's quirks and it will reward you well. Keep in mind that Garretts do not operate like other detectors you may own or have owned. If you try to use them like other detectors you will run into problems. Good luck and come see us and post some finds.

I spoke with Garrett recently and they offered to trade my older coil for the PROformance model at a 40% discount. Call and ask.
