It came with the stock coil and 8" minelab coil. I am planning on just using it for a while with the factory settings. Do you think it would be better for me to start off with the smaller 8" coil or start with the 10" one? I've been reading many posts on this board for newbies like me so any other help you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats, Mike! You'll like that machine if you give yourself time to learn it. (Thought it might sound like R2D2 on acid at first.)

On which coil you start with, I'd say it depends on the trash level of where you'll be searching. The smaller one will be less confusing if there's much trash in the ground.

What machine were you using before this? (I was using a Sov just before I bought my SE a few months ago and I think it helped my transition.)

Have fun!

Don't laugh but i've been using a Whites coinmaster 2500/D that I got when I was in high school. I actually found a lot of good stuff but have dug so much junk to find the good stuff.

When I first started with a Explorer, I metal detected in the sand for about three weeks to get used to pinpointing with it. Going to the DD coil can be a challenge when you first find a target. I started with the eight inch coil and it has done very well for me. But then again I like to hunt where all the junk is too. Around picnic tables

Hi,
Give your self a year of just playing with it,learning the sounds, and just having fun..Then you will advance without much thought.
Grasshopper.

Thanks all for helping me out. I appreciate it. That's what makes this forum great....everyone helping everyone out.

Hey Mike, I took some advice from the forum a couple of months ago and got the 8" coil to help learn the SE. I think it really helped out, I was having a little trouble early on in trashy sites with the stock coil, got the smaller coil and used it awhile. I would say after a month or so of using the 8" coil I put the stock coil back on and didnt have the earlier problems anymore. I since then took some more advice from my friends here and got the SunRay probe and am just lovin that thing!!!
Dont worry about losing depth with the smaller coil, to me that thing is a beast!! I found a small silver ring in hard rocky ground around the 8" mark on my shovel, and it just blew my phones off. I like the small coil, so does the whole right side of my body!! Patience is the key and force yourself to slow down in the trash, the SE will not disappoint you. That was my biggest obstacle when switching from a faster machine.
You are right, this forum is just chocked full of good folk!!
