I have permission to hunt the park from the park manager and this ass of a cop just tells me i can't hunt after 11 pm where can i find the laws for this. and on the private property i was hunting between the road and the sidewalk and he said that was city property and i couldn't hunt it. police stop all the time and ask me if i'm finding anything. and have never said anything this cop was just really bored i need to find the real laws. who do i talk to. really chaps my ass.

The parks around here are posted that they close at dusk or 10pm.

If you have permission, check back with the park manager and ask him to put it in writing so you can show that to the officer the next time he says something to you.

In a lot of cities, you can look up the website and they have the entire city code online.

A lot of cities have by-laws in place for parks where you are supposed to be out at a certain time. I guess if there wasn't, people would just hang out and stay there 24. And some of these people do :nono: after dark, make a lot of noise, litter and get drunk.

Now that little piece of grass between the sidewalk and road is usually city property and OK to hunt. However, there are some land barons out there who figure that because they cut the grass, they can kick you off. In theory, they can't, but in reality they will call the police, yell at you and even threaten you. I have been threatened before with a baseball bat. It's just best to move on to the next house and carry on. Trying to argue with some of these people is pointless, and they may get organized and harass every metal detectorists not only on the grass, but at nearby schools and parks. It's just best to acknowledge his request and just move on. I as a general rule won't even hunt a well manicured piece of grass in front of a house to avoid getting myself into those situations.

most cities do have a park curfew to stop people getting mugged at night, kids from using it to have sex and drink, and homeless people from sleeping there. Also to keep people from stealing playground equipment under cover of darkness. The city does own all easements from the road to the sidewalks. thats why they pay for building the sidewalks. However most public property is ok to hunt. Ask him to show you the law where you cant detect on public property.Or rather ask the city clerk. the cop would arrest you for asking that question probably.

I look up the city's web site and search for metal detecting. If nothing pops up the I believe it's fair game. I did have one city worker tell me that even though there was no detecting law there was one for destroying city property. Most cities will have something about this and could use it against you.

yeah i expect they could considering cutting a hole and killing their grass ,as destroying city property. But walking on grass kills it too lmao

supposedly different areas have have different rules, regulations and laws. Here in Northwest Ohio the property owner's deed shows that the property owner actually owns to the middle pf the street. The "right-of-way" is for governments and utilities only, it is not public property it is private. I have never seen a post where anyone has actually went to the City Attorney to determine legality or ill-legality. They have talked to a cop, they are not well versed in these issues, somebody with the public works department, etc. Seems, but not guaranteed, that they seek someone who doesn't know what they are talking about so they can trespass and clean out the goodies. As John said about not exciting the natives. It's getting more restrictive as to where we can hunt all the time.
If you want to night hunt your parks because of your job see if you can get written permission from the parks director and have them let the rangers know about it.
Also, never argue with the guy with the gun. Second place in a gunfight is not a good thing.
HH with permission!

I saw in a video where some people were issued tickets for playing soccer in a park. They claimed it was destroying the property. Did anyone else see that story? I guess if caught with a detector in the same park is grounds for immediate hanging from the highest tree!

...........a favor ...lay low and don't draw fire!!!!!!! John (Edmonton) 's advice is good.........don't make a big deal out of it or you might even see " NO METAL DETECTING" signs come up in your parks. It doesn't matter if you are in Paris,New York or Moscow.........you can not beat city hall !!!!!!

Ask around and try and get something in writing. Hope it all works out.

I have always felt weary about hunting the area in front of peoples houses. The home owner might not own it, but it is right in front of their house. They water the grass, moe the lawn, so I would ask every time before I try to hunt it just out of courtesy. I could see how people would get pissed if the come home from work and see some stranger poking around the lawn not knowing if that stranger was also going into the back and side yards.

Wow .....What is his deal.....I hunt the treebelts all the time . No problems from the police or neighbors. They come out and want to help. I would do reaseach and tell them what to do with there donuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It might come down to Satellites issuing me a ticket for taking a leak on my farm? Could happen! They will let Geese make messes on the sidewalks but give you a ticket for walking on the grass!!!!

Check with City Hall. The parkway between the sidewalk and the street is city property but open to the public unless you live in a third world town. :)

Yeah I've had a few irate homeowners raise hell because I was hunting the parkway. I usually smile and move on feeling sorry for the dumb boob who doesn't know it ain't his property.
