JUST PURCHASED A 17" SEARCH COIL

That's tough to answer in real world conditions. I can tell you that air tests showed a significant increase in depth... I know I know, for what an air test is worth. Personally, I use it simply for the extra area it can cover.

After much research, I have discovered mine will pick up all targets that are 1" below the surface 100% of the time, unless they are gold chains. I will try the same test with 2" next year and update this post.

Well, that's good to hear.

"Ditto"....GKMan. I'm no professional by any means but in my use of the 17 inch coil I can't honestly say that there is a difference in depth but I love the coverage. Cover more territory in a single pass....lol.

My real world test for the 17" is that it is no deeper than the stock coil. But it sure can cover some territory. I run mostly in auto +3.

You will not notice any depth improvement on things like coins and rings , however there is a fair bit better depth increase on large and medium sized targets. The rule to remember with bigger coils is that the larger the target the more depth improvement big coil gives.
I sold my 17 inch coil because it was too heavy and i could not get good pinpointing with it, also i was digging coins at the same depths as i got with the 11 inch coil. The really good thing about the 17 inch coil (as far as i was concerned) was on beaches the extra coverage is fantastic.
the finds rate improved on beaches as the coil covers big swathes of Terra firma. Land or sand. 1 hour to 2 hours was the most i wanted to swing the big coil without a harness.

I take my 17" coil to some places and it gets really deep and have found silvers at 8-12". I have found a quite a few targets around 10" or maybe a hair deeper that I feel I would have missed with stock coil. It is rare for me to find something that deep with stock coil. This might be because with the 17" I literally just drag on the ground? But like others have sent Its heavy but covers a lot of area! Just my 2 cents

The 17" coil is deeper than stock coil on coins in most dirt but you have to run high manual sensitivity to realize added depth . The larger coil sees much more dirt and therefore more mineral and targets both good and bad and as a result will run at a lower auto sensitivity than its smaller brothers .

I ran my 17 inch coil yesterday, for the 1st time in a long time, in ground coin mode with 28 manual sensitivity, over an area at an old park that I had just ran over with my 11 mi u test before, got a repeating but iffy silver signal at 11 and 12 inches, sometimes all I got was a thunk, decided to dig it, and was very deep when I saw the shiney glint of a silver dime, turned out to be my 2nd ever Barber, a 1915 in very good condition! My Lesche had probably less than an inch of its handle above the hole, and my propointer was in all the way. I'm pretty sure I would not have found it with my 11, I may have simply missed that spot earlier when I had the 11 on, but I was very happy. Mainly though I love it for the area it covers! I have some pics, will try to post them.

I was a little scared to purchase the 17" because of the weight factor. I did however purchase the 6" coil. I find little difference in the depth that the 6 gets compared to the 11" coil. I was wondering how much difference could their be depth wise between the 6" and 17". I never tried the 17 but I am digging coins at 6" with no problem. The areas I hunt have a lot of trash. I feel that would put the 17 at a disadvantage. I also feel hunting in ocean water might put the 17" at a disadvantage. With the size and weight in a rough current seem to be a little to much. After reading some of the post, I think I will stay with the 6" & !1". I like the 6" so much I never put the 11" back on.

My air test showed a 10% increase of dept over the stock coil.

That said I usually run the 17 with a a 19 sensitivity to avoid noise of the ground minerals and bits of iron. I can usually run about 21 sensitivity with the stock coil. These settings are very quite in my area and allow me to cover much more area because lm not chasing every little blip with the higher sensitivity. It seems if there is something there worth investigating it will let you know and you can always turn up sensitivity to check it out further.

Correction on that 10%. I was just reviewing my notes from the air test. I should have said 20%

I wrote down for a silver dime, stock coil good at 8" iffy to 9.5 gone at 10"

17" coil hits good to 10" iffy to13 gone at 13.5.

That's full sensitivity in coin mode air test. I think it was in ground coin setting.

Similar results with different coins except a nickle was only about 10% better.

Hope that answers your question Bob , good luck with that 17"

P.S. mine always reads about 2" deeper than the coin usually is.

My experience on the beach, wet sand and dry sand with same settings during a weekend trip one day for 11" and another day for 17" (so same basic area):

-With 17" I had to consistently dig deeper than 11". I'm guessing ~4"-5" deeper. For coins, pull tabs, aluminum bottle covers. (11" findings were mostly in the 1"-4" range.)
-Using it in the shallow surf, targets were so deep I could not retrieve them 12"-16" deep on the screen.
-When swinging the 17", I found my swings were not consistently horizontal to the ground near the end of travel. The 17" would pick up targets out to the side....another foot outside where I thought I was covering! It took some digging to finally see what was happening.

Using it in the woods (hard packed Virginia Clay) I covered an area with the 11" with very little signals. I went back over the exact same area with the 17" and found what looked like a small RR Spike about 14" deep. Chunk of metal (7" x 5" x 1/4") about 16 " deep. This took quite awhile to dig up.

So I'm convinced the 17" does indeed detect deeper targets than the 11".
