If metal detector manufacturers make their search coils to be tough. Then why do they recommend using coil covers? Wouldn't you think they would make them with protection already on them ? Just thinking out loud ...lol
 
I bought a machine from a guy worked like it should.
He said the bottom was scratched sure enough you could
see some deep sections that were missing.
Some of these were 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.
Asked him what happened he said lots of heavy scrubbing in gravel,rock
and sand. Personally I never touch the ground with my hunts.
The detector worked like it should.
I got it of him cheap and bought a coil cover applied it
and sealed it with silicon.
Voila a new coil and have used it and works great even looks new.
If it had been used originally it would be without those scratches
