JW Fishers Pulse 8 UPDATE

Well as I posted before, I picked up a vintage 1981 JW Fishers Pulse 8 for $25. The battery was indeed TOAST, super corroded and 3 contacts broken. I had Batteries Plus construct a new pack with a higher maH rating for about $50. Well low and behold, she fired up!! Sadly in transit to test it I snapped the darn headphone connector lol. Well I called JW Fishers today and they still use the same headphone connector on their newer Pulse 8X's and they are sending me the connector for $12 shipped!! Once I repair that, I'll get some test results for ya on various targets. Stay tuned...

I have always wondered how one of these would be for prospecting. I have a friend that claims has was around one that was being used in Arizona and it was blowing the others out with it's power.

I'm interested in that as well since I'll shortly be moving to AZ. I spoke with the techs at JW Fishers and they claim that it isn't suited for prospecting... It won't pick up items smaller then a coin at any kind of depth. Where it excels is with larger targets at depth. Techs say coin sized objects at just past a foot. The pulse width on it is 100uS and for smaler targets the pulse should be lower around 15-35uS. Most beach hunting detectors are set at about 25uS to hit harder on coin sized targets. So in all actuality I'm guessing you'd miss the tiny gold but may have an edge with larger pieces at extreme depth.

Well the headphone connection will require a bit of soldering work, but in the meantime i found an attachment in the box I bought the detector in that was a small black cone shaped objects about 2" diameter and an inch tall with the same headphone connection. I hooked it up and it turns out its a type of external speaker! No speaker cup obviously since it's meant to be waterproof but it emits the detectors sound. I'm assuming this is to for use while diving to place under your wetsuit hood? Or in my case I'll be sticking it in a set of ear muffs for some testing. I air tested it last night (which I know air tests aren't very accurate with PI's) but it picked up a zinc penny at about 11" with a clean clear tone. Picked up my cell phone at 24". Only thing that I don't like about it is the tone reset time. When you go over a target the tone seems to linger much too long based on the target size and depth. I figure a penny at 6" would be a rather tight sounding shorter tone but it squeals from extreme left to extreme right of the coil and even lingers for a second or 2 after the target is out from under the coil... Gonna take some getting used too... I'm hoping to maybe get some use of it on the beach here in NJ and maybe prospecting when I move to AZ.

Main question is do you guys think it would be a better detector to use on the beach then my Sovereign Elite??

fir469,
I had a Pulse 8X several years ago. Never used it much as it
isn't for the hobby detectorist. Seems they are used a lot by police
departments and government types and ship wreck divers. And it
is heavy. The object you found that is black and cone shaped is
a bone phone to wear under your diving hood . Good luck and if
you find goodies with it, let us know.
