Kansas Heat, Learning experience

Howdy All ! With the heat today I wasn't able to go out metal detecting until almost dark, what I found out was that I can learn ALOT by not using the screen and just using my ears and that I need to do that A lot more to get better. The only Big problem was not being able to see how deep I needed to dig. But I found it to be great fun & a big challenge trying to figure out what was under the ground without seeing what numbers were popping up. I would suggest for everyone new to the safari to give it a try, its got me thinking that I might cover up my screen except to look at digging depth for the next few times out to see if I can improve. Being in the dark also gave me even more respect for my Garrett pin pointer, gosh I love that thing. Well just wanted to say Howdy and shoot the idea to you about detecting in the dark as a learning tool if you haven't done it before.

I do it a lot when I go to the beach. I LOVE beach detecting at night- so peaceful.

You are right about the depth thing. What I do is attach one of those tiny ultralight LED lights to my ballcap and do a momentary check on it when I want to see the depth. I also keep some tape over the light to minimize the output. It also allows me to see whats in my scoop better.

Yeah..something about hunting at night really sharpens up all the other senses once the eyes are taken out of the equation. This truly is a sport a person could do well even if they were blind. Have you tried using a screwdriver as either a target locator or reference point for your dig? Just stab it in the ground even in the dark and feel your way around it with your digger. It sort of acts like a little pot handle on the plug too. Really makes a person tighten up the targets location as opposed to just digging in the general ping area. Nice post, good on ya!

Got in a morning of detecting on a day off. Found this 1941 dime in the parking lot of a old country cemetery. I don't go around the graves but figure the parking lots are fair game.


To answer the question on if I have ever detected at the Kansas State Fair? No I have not, I don't travel far to detect and that would be about a 2 hour drive for me. I like doing little old, hopefully little known areas that are now quiet. I want to relax when sweeping the ground, not having to deal with people being around me.
