Curious---What was wrong with your coils that you had to return both of them?---I have had both the 6X8's & the 10X12's & they were fine.
I bought both of mine around this time last year; I already had a 12X15 which I loved. I'm not sure about you, but I also used the X-1 probe, so I never had to string the coil cords up the shaft when I started to use them. A couple weeks after I received them, I decided to send my X-1 probe back because it was falsing every time I used it, a wire had frayed. That was when I discovered that the new batch Kellyco had just received in had been produced with cords out of spec. The diameter of the pigtail section was slightly bigger than that of my 12X15. As a result, you simply could not slide the cord up your shaft. You physically had to tie a string to one end and forcefully pull it up the shaft. I also think I remember the pig tail section being longer (like an inch or two) than my original 12X15. This made it impossible to collapse the shaft when not using it, which prevented me from putting the detector in the trunk of my car. I remember going out after my kid was asleep at around 7:30PM, knowing I'd have light until about 9PM to detect, and it taking me 30 minutes to string up my 10X12 coil because I ended up having to tie the wire to my hands fee ear set to the cord to pull it through the shaft.
So, I called Kellyco that next week, the tech I talked to asked for the diameter of my cord and confirmed that their supplier apparently had made coils with cords slightly bigger. At the time they asked me what I wanted to do, I said I was cool with it, as I intended to always use the X-1 probe and this 99% of the time should be a non-issue. I was just happy it was reported, and that future shipments would be produced in spec.
Well fast forward to this year, and my X-1 went on the fritz again, with the same issue, the wire going to the probe, which is a 1" coil, was fraying and it was unusable. (I'm not rough with it, I'm not sure why it keeps happening to mine) So, I went through 2 weeks of having to pull the cord of my coils up through the shaft of my explorer. Because of the hassle, I wasn't switching out coils that much but kept on having to physically pull the cord out the bottom of the shaft so I could collapse the detector to fit in my trunk. I noticed that I was putting a lot of stress on the strain relief that goes directly into the SEF coil. Giving my experience with the X-1 probe, and the strain relief not being enough to prevent wire fraying, and the beginning of falsing/over sensitivity in my 10X12, I decided to call Kellyco
before the 1 year warranty ran out. I had asked on the forums if new owners had to pull the cord up, or if it slid up, and I was happy to see that the cords were back in spec. Kellyco came through with awesome customer service and set up the RMA on my coils. I got put on the waiting list and got my new ones in this week, which I'm happy to report.
So here I am writing and giving Kellyco good press because they deserve it. I'm on the fence about continuing with the X-1 even though I feel blind detecting without it. So Kellyco will be getting my business when I purchase a new back up/perhaps primary pinpointer, the DetectorPro Pistol Probe, 6" of depth, sweet!
Hope that answered your question, when did you get your coils and does it have the "in spec" cords? I know others who purchased from the same batch I originally received ended up buying upper shafts to reduce the wear and tear, but that wouldn't solve the problem I had not being able to collapse the shafts. Also, I already had over $300 invested in the coils, plus I had lower shafts for each one, I really felt I shouldn't have to buy an upper shaft. I didn't even have to make this argument with Kellyco BTW, again superior customer service.
