Kicking a not so dead Vaquero horse

Yes, I bought rechargable NiMH 9.6v. Keep them charged. Pretty sure that isnt it. I was a little concerned about the charged voltage, but I read here that the Vaqs have an internal regulator. If anyone reading this has other ideas about this I'm open.

Ok guys, didnt want to start a new thread and its still about my Vaq so I am going to ask this here. We have mentioned the 5.75" coil to help in the really trashy areas that I have been hunting. When I start looking at coils they mention Concentric and Widescan. What I read is concentric is used more in discrimination mode. What is the consensus here about these two? Is one deeper, better etc. than the other? Does it matter greatly? I havent done it yet, but if I search this forum, will I find those answers? Thanks in advance.
Bill

Widescan (DD)...better in bad ground because it see's 30% less ground .....and good in areas of trash...not as deep as concentric for the same size coil

Concentric...Good in trash as well and deeper than DD (widescan) but not as good in bad ground.

Both have their uses....

Miss anything?

Gary

Hey Bill,
I have been checking out your posts and the replies and thought I would give you my opinion on the Vaquero.
I tried to PM you, but since you have not been registered long, you are not able to receive PMs yet.
First of all, this is not the only detector I have, but for hunting very old house sites that are littered with iron, This is my go to detector for two reasons.. one is that it is light allowing me to hike for long distances and swing for many hours once I get there without getting tired and two, it is probably the quietest detector I have for these types of sites.
It will sound off on large iron like horseshoes and axes and such, but that is OK for me since these are considered nice finds especially around very old sites.
On nails it is very quiet and even if it sounds off on one, the signal is not very good.
I have the high tone model and for me, I can tell alot about the signals.
Iron has a snappy quality to it while copper, brass, silver, and lead has a more smooth beginning and end to it.
I think this is more evident with the high tone than the low.
As far as coils go, I have the stock coil, the 5. 75" concentric coil and the 5.75" widescan coil and like them all, but do not have alot of time with the widescan yet.
It is slighty heavier than the small concentric coil, even though it is the same size, but not much heavier.
Most claim that the concentric discriminates better than the widescan and detects deeper also unless you are in highly mineralized ground which the widescan is better suited since it does not "see" as much ground as the concetric coil.
I would highly recommend getting a small coil and you may find that you will keep that coil on the detector most of the time.
I see there was some mention about headphones. I use a set of killer Bees and they work great on my detector... I highly recommend them.
A good set of headphones can make up for not having visual or tone ID and allows you to hear the subtle differences of signal quaility.
I have also searched school yards and around older home with it and have to admit it is a challenge sometimes especially being used to a VID machine.
Still I don't have any problem using it at these sites.. you just have to remember it is a beep and dig machine.
I don't understand why you did not have better luck at those sites you mentioned, but perhaps someone has hit this area before.
I have to admit I have done the same thing with other machines and couldn't understand why I couldn't find some old coins.
My buddy and I searched around an old house that was built in 1905 and after about six hours of searching, we found much clad, but only one silver coin... a 1917 mercury dime.. no wheat pennies at all!!! Sound familiar??
I did find a ring lost by the owner and returned it to her and also found 6 civil war era bullets which were not very deep.
Now I can't figure this out.. there should have been some wheaties, IH cents, Barber coins and other types of silver coins, but we couldn't find them.
I don't believe it had anything to do with the detector.. I was using a Minelab X-Terra 50 with a 10.5" widescan coil which has located some nice coins for me over the last few years.
Maybe someone has detected this yard before.. I don't know.
Don't give up on the little Vaquero just yet.. it is a very good detector and I would not like to be without mine.
Good luck,
Felix

If you have doubts....send in the control housing with the coil(s) in question and a note in the box detailing your questions and concerns.

I would call ahead and speak to someone to let them know it's coming or they may be able to give you the answers you seek without sending it in at all.

They will take care of you one way or the other...of that I'm sure.

forgot to mention that my pinpoint button seems to be messed up. Lately when I have it pushed in to pinpoint a target it will do it for a couple seconds and then it will start making the tone like it was still in discriminate mode even though I still have it pushed in. Idk if that would make a difference in its performance, but I definitely need it fixed.

Some time back, i was upset at the lack of depth that my Vaquero had..Did not have the cord from the coil to the box tightened.Had another turn or better to go, and the depth was something like just hardly 4 inches on a dime in the ground..

First, Gary when you said one was better in bad ground, doesnt GB take care of this problem?Somewhat? Just asking. Its sorta hard to decide because I really want to get through the trash, it's quite maddening. There is sooo much at the old home sites. I have run into several sites that seem to have little globs of melted aluminum everywhere. I think it may be antemony. Not sure where it comes from. I need to digest this info a bit.
Fwcrawford, this post started for me because of what you described. Being in a prime spot and not finding anything. I would bet anything that there is way too much area to over hunt. It must be close to 800 acres of space or more. The state has left the trees and shrubs so you know exactly where the yards were. I think we may have 3-4 years yet before we cant hunt there anymore, so I am determined to either learn this detector or find out if there is a problem. Believe me I am looking into all the information that I get here.
I read somewhere here that this hobby gets in your blood, I can testify to that. 43 years and counting, I just need to be more creative in my research. Back in the early 70s you could literally fill your pockets in an afternoon with IHs,wheats, jewelry and silver galore. Today, well I would be happy with a couple of wheats and the token silver. Nature of the beast.
HH to all, Bill

I never would have figured we have 'bad' ground here but we must. Sometimes I have to make a fairly large change when I readjust for GB. I think I will probably pick up the smaller DD coil.
With everything that has been talked about here, the biggest problem is more than likely operator error. It just doesnt feel that way when the only thing I find is trash.
I want to thank all for your comments and suggestions.

After you try these things, if it's still giving you issues, definitely send it in to get checked. That's what I'm going to do with mine. That smaller DD coil should help you out if you have bad ground...where abouts do you live? A lot of people know what kind of mineralization places have.

Bobby, I live in Spokane, Washington. This whole area is a mining and farming area. Gold, silver and lead are mined. It would make sense that mineralization would be an issue, I just never thought of it.it.

Do you hand tighten it or do you use a tool? I hand tighten mine as much as I can go and even when it seems tight it looks like there is still plenty of space for it to be tightened more. I'm just curious now as to the way people tighten the coil

Ok, just picked up a set of Garrett headphones. Just couldnt afford KBs or GGs at this time. I'll see if these help.

Bill ANY headphones are better than none.... I like the full cup over the ear...that way as the signals clip and buzz you'll be able to tell.

I went out today.....found a pouch full of slaw and foil...7 Penny's and one nickle....did find a little bit of junk jewelry but nothing life changing.
I did find three 30 calabre shells connected on a belt from a machine gun. Makes ya wonder doesn't it.

I really listened to each signal and dug everything after doing so.....the way that detector reacts to each metal is so different. It constantly amazes me
that people can't hear those differences. I guess I'm just so used to it I can't help but hear it now.

You guys that are having issues....listen to each signal....I mean hit it from every angle...raise/lower the disc and listen again...go to AM and listen then go back and
play with your sensitivity a bit. Take the time to learn it....and then and only then dig it. I promise you if you stick to it you'll soon know what it's telling you it is.

Gary, I have been trying to pay close attention to every signal. The 5good coins I've found had signals that I did feel were coins for sure. They just sounded different. The headphones should help.
