Kinda new to metal detecting need help please.

I live in norther Arizona and had a gmt and it seems this detector was not very good with the ground here in Arizona. I really want to detect but trying to make a wise choice. My choices are down to the Infinium and the Gold bug 2. I am leaning towards the Infinium any advice on either detector would be greatly appreciated.

You are looking at two metal detectors at totally opposite ends of the detector spectrum to each other.

The Infinium is the T Rex and the GB 2 is a Veloceraptor.
The T Rex will make a meal of the big stuff no matter how tough the going but the small meat will slip between it's teeth if it moves too fast
The Veloceraptor races about madly like a runnaway rotary saw blade. snapping up all the small stuff and making short work of some big stuff along the way. but bouncing off the big rocks that it cannot move.
So work out what you want to catch, Small easy pickings bits or large bits that are down in deep and maybe jagging a small bit every now and again that gets stuck between the T Rex teeth.

Oh the meat is what I want,but can you use a smaller coil not losing much depth and getting both the meat and the small bits that don't fall through the teeth. How is the T-rex in heavy mineralized ground ? Do hot rocks bother the T-rex. And with the T-rex is it true you must swing it slow ?

Hi prospector62 ~ I would pay up to about $850.oo myself, think i paid $825.oo for one that prolly had less than 10 hrs. on it, after about 5 mos. of research on the $ and Performance. This & a couple other forums where Adrian SS, Fishers Ghost and Ivanll (little did they know) and a Review by Adrian Ross were the Final reasons I knew what i was going to do & I am so glad i didn't get caught up in any Hoo-Doo and went with the Infinium. I use the I~LS as the T-Rex & the Lobo St (could be Gold Bug or others to some) as Companion & Pinpointer while using Mono on I~LS for Nuggets and everything else as well. I doubt that i will find out later that I made any mistake on these choices as Afield I havent found any yet and love using & learnibg both Still. Good Luck - Ken

Oh P-62 , first used my Infinium on 4wks of a 5 week trip to Mojave then Arizona and it does what it's said to, Very Well - in All ground I searched in Arizona & Calif. I have only used the 14" Mono so far but i found a great deal on an 8" mono that i'll try also. There are very experienced Infinium users around here and know what their Talking about.

I doubt that I would go over 850 AU for one in good condition.
Find out what year it was made and have a look at the coil cable; If it is flatish then the coil is an early model, if it is black and round then it is a later model coil. Pre 2004 may have the early coils.
Garrett could probably tell you from the serial number if it is fully upgraded to Aussie specs, however even the early models worked well in USA ground conditions so don't be too fussed about this.
Serial number is in the battery compartment.

ivanll ~ I'm sure U know where You've Posted quite well - I meant u Guys were the Convincers for me to go with Infinium & I thank You . I'm fairly new to Detecting but Very experienced in other areas of my life. I like that i have something to learn more about , I have Many other things wired that i do. I have the utmost Respect for the Information (you guys know who You are) recd. here. I agree with Fishers ghost on the Updated Infinium & Coil configs. for prospector62 . What i'm Thinking of doing to big coil cover is cut away at the large opening part ( Gray Area in Pic) to hop Rocks while Combing for Gold. I like to set it over anything that'll fit to read for tones. Check Pic , Ken . . . whatcha think ?

Well I guess that would work but it won't stay on for long, so you will have to secure it in some way

I see now you want an open coil cover................. the solid one is to prevent sticks and snags when prospecting in the bush.
There are a number of ways to protect an open coil without a full skid plate.
I posted some pictures on "how to" on the Au. Infinium LS forum, do not know if still there or in the Vault; can't lock in........ might have been booted off,........... it happens.
Alternative look at "kimbucktwo" there is definitely a picture posted a few days ago............more to go if there was/is an interest.

I see that you and fishers ghost are very helpful with new users. My infinium is not here yet but it is coming with the 10x14 DD and the 8 inch mono. I will only be using it in moderate to heavy mineralized ground. Only working in shallow creeks and dry land the gold fields looking for gold nuggets. If you were me which coil would you use ?

I had a look throught the remaining posts on the AU INF Forum for the post you refered to but it and buckets of others are no longer there.
I have been trying to repost my original posts from memory plus what I had saved to My Docs.

There are still about 70 or so members remaining on the forum but only 5 or 6 posting at very random intervals;Phil prob won't keep it going for much longer.

FG and I have been honing our skills for some time.

In a creak i would use the 8"Mono....On an large open flat like area with little to no obstacles the 14x10" DD would be my choice.

A DD coil is a side to side kind of coil where as a mono coil can detect in any direction (side-side....forth and back)
A DD coil can give more information than a Mono coil, excellent when one know ..........when not it can be annoying............testing and learning is the key.
Both coils have their advantages as when used in creek bed or flat areas.

Hi All , FG i figure the area that attaches is directly on the coil area soze i think scratching the inside of plate with sandpaper then use spray contact cement would work fine to join them. it's the cutting part i'm concerned with , hot knife to melt or razor knife a bunch of times (in entire layout) with very small penetration around & around . worried about chipping with a saw. Then sand the cutout nicely to smooth out. Ken

Ok everyone I said I won't do this again ,but lets see what happens.!!Garrett Infinium LS is one of the best detectors for AZ.I have been to Rich Hill with mind I also hunt the Salt river.depending on which coil you use ( I have all of them ) you can find the backs of post earing, small nuggets as deep as 6 to 8 inches. I have dug rings as deep as 26 inches in FL.. I live in Fl. and visit my Mother-in - law who lives in Phoenix.between Bell and union hill about a block off Cave creek.The only other thinkabout the Infinium LS is bring your Passport because the Infinium go's DEEP,DEEP,DEEP.
