Large Deep Iron - Fe-Co Wrap Around Falsing?

AVXVA

Member
I notice while in Coin Mode: on some large and deeply buried objects the ETrac will jump around both in tone and crosshair. It's almost a random set of readings from 1-38 to 10-43 to 2-45 with nulling. Converting over to the fully open screen on the same target yields 1-38 to 35-38 to 25-38 with tones to match. Also changing the geometry of the sweep increases the random results, but there is always a high Fe somewhere.

Is this Iron Falsing? Does the Etrac reveal (properly detect) iron once the discrimination is off?

Hypothetically, while in Coin Mode on another large and deeply buried object the ETrac reads 1-39, 1-43, 1-40. Changing the geometry of the sweep yields 1-43, 1-39, 1-40. Converting over to the
fully open screen (no discrimination) yields 1-43, 1-39, 1-45. Changing the geometry of the sweep yields 1-43, 1-39, 1-40. Maybe you get a 10-43 going another direction, but you NEVER get a low tone or a Fe reading over 12. Is this iron falsing?

The basic question is: Is there ever a time where the Etrac is flat out lying to you over large and deeply iron? (I've already learned my lesson with aluminum cans and slaw.)

Thanks!!

Robert

My experience is, to both of your questions Yes and No. You can experience iron falsing (and most of the time thats what it is) with what you described in your first paragraph. Rusted iron nearby will cause you to false, depending on sweep speed and angle. Also bigger iron close to the surface will cause your machine to sound off and bounce as well. That being said you can also have a good target there.

Have faith. You will start to be able to distinguish for the most part what is a good sound and what is iron falsing. The trick for me is to play with a good signal. Sometimes I'll play with one for 20 - 30 seconds. I have had those turn into good targets but that is only on few occasions.

By "playing with that signal" here is whats going through my little brain.

1. Do I get a consistant signal - for me this is the most important (my target has to pass this test) Really no number looking here yet.
2. Do I get a signal at the 90 degree ( again no number looking here too much)
3. Does the signal sound at about the same spot (where I imagine the target to be)
4. Whats the depth (site relevant) and what is the Conductive numbers - do they hold pretty good.
5. IF- I'm still unsure I might try 2 more things.
A. What does my machine say in AM
B. I might switch over to 2 Tone Ferrous and play with it there as well.

To your second question I have dug good targets - in Conductive sounds - with a 01 Ferrous reading. Seems like, for the most part, they were IH's or Wheats.

When I first started on my machine I dug a lot of iffy targets and never had one turn out good...BUT I learned a lot about my machine. When you retrieve bent nails, fencing staples, and barb wire you start to listen real quick. Yes, it does help to have a good silver, IH or wheatie once in a while.

Looking back about 275 hours ago I laugh, because I could kill on nickels. Nickels didn't iron false. I mean there's other trash you'll dig lookin' for nickels, but you won't dig up bent nails and above mentioned trash looking for nickels.

What do I get by watching the screen while in All Metal / Pinpoint Mode? The machine is screaming in pinpoint and the crosshair is reading 34-35-39. That's iron for darn sure. But, can a 1-39/43 in pinpoint mode that reads 1-39/43 EVERY time be iron falsing?

Once again,
Neb trac is dead on for my experiance as well. Once I have checked it in all metal if I am still getting the high conductor number in the same basic area of screen then that is a dig for certian.

good luck,

So to be crystal clear on this--I am rather dense I suppose--after I switch over into ALL Metal Mode the Etrac will properly register old, rusted, deep iron with a much lower tone and a lower right crosshair placement, HOWEVER, it might also bounce around and perhaps indicate a 1 Fe number?

I will put it like this. After you've dug up some of those signals to confirm that is indeed what is happening, then puzzle pieces will start to fall in place. When I'm at a new spot I will dig some just to see what the targets are like.
If these are places I can come back and hunt time and again, I'll for sure dig quite a few iffie's, depending on my mood.

For me in All Metal, wide open screen, trash density HIGH, Conductive Sounds, if I see a consistant 90% of the time 01-38 through 01-43 I'm digging it. BUT that should hit (assuming you've opened up that spot in Minelab's Coin Pattern...and you'll want to) even in your discrimination pattern. If in All Metal, wide open screen, trash density HIGH, Conductive Sounds I see a 35-46, 34-45...etc. then jumps up to 01-3?-01-4? I will probably leave it alone. Unless the sound is just a little different. To me nails and deep iron will have a "crackling" type sound to it and the length of the sound will be longer one way.

If these are sites I'm just visiting and time is limited, my hunt narrows down a bit as to what I will dig, I start to pay attention to the more standard (gonna dig it every time) signals.. I am by no means 100% right. At this time, this is my hunting style.

Would someone please explain--step by step how to SAVE a Mode and Discrimination pattern to the Etrac?

1) I'm able to manipulate the discrimination screen just fine to create a custom pattern--
2) I hit the Detect button--
3) It prompts me to save -- I hit save--
4) Then what?? Nothing happens...

When I go to Menu I can't find anything saved. Been through both books--this is stupid hard to do.

ALSO, what is the difference between "A User Mode" in the first menu screen and a "Discrimination Pattern" in the second Menu screen?

Robert

The first time you're prompted to Yes - No - or Cancel it just loads into Smartfind.

So:

Yes - Load into Smartfind (right arrow - on the four arrows at bottom left

Press Menu button again

IN Discrimination

Arrow down to SAVE

Then Right arrow on save

then Right arrow on a pattern 1, 2, etc. wherever you want.

A Discriminiation pattern is just that - the white and black parts of your screen. What you have decided to allow to hear or not. It does not MESS with your modes you've set. Things like Threshold volume, Recover Deep ON or OFF, Ferrous or Conductive SOUNDS. Those type of preferences are not messed with.

Only when you change the mode do you have different discrimination patterns along with changes made to the VARIABILITIES, THRESHOLD VOLUME, RESPONSE. etc...

Thank you for that!! I've been pulling my HAIR OUT trying to create a pattern and experiment.

That really helps.

Absolutely. Now get out and start posting some neat stuff this great machine is capable of and the main thing is to HAVE FUN and Enjoy.
