Last cold hunting I hope!

Went out in the wind and snow this am..got 136 coins for 10.33. Amongst them was a 39 Jeff nickel, a 44 wheat, and a Sac dollar. That gold medallion is a fake, but it sounded good, in the high 50's, in the dirt about 3" and made my heart jump about the same distance. I found where a huge soccer tournament was going on, 100's of cars, kids, a concession stand, all the women were wearing gloves, (great! good chance for a ring drop!) I'll hit that place hard either this afternoon or tomorrow. Real cold strong wind and pellet snow. The simple pleasures were stopping at a McDonalds to get a cup of coffee and take a squirt, Man! That hot water and air hand dryer in the can sure felt good on my frozen paws! Got a 2Q stack, and a 3Q tight spill. Still getting lots of nickels, Running soft settings, 53 sens, hit some declining snowpiles for a little more, real slow work with only the bottom of the coil about the size of a golfball operating to pull coins and targets from all the nearby trash, keeping an eye out for rings, chains, and bills. I have not found any gold or silver yet this year, and the totlot finds are slim..too cold all winter for the kids to play, and getting worked good by the noobs..one thing, the Canadian pennys sure sound louder and hotter than ours, almost just like a dime....I always come home with several of them. Changed the batteries in the F70 today too. Hope everybody got out and found something large, silvery or goldie!

Gotta admire your passion and tenacity under those conditions - looks like it was not a wasted day - always that hope for the big score. I will get back to detecting tomorrow - after some more R&D for instrument settings. I have been making notes on the advice given and then trying them out by burying various coins, rings, new tabs, old tabs, etc to better understand what the tones and noises are telling me. Have figured out an on edge coin gives a double/sometimes triple hit with the DD coil. Warm weather has been elusive in Western PA this year. I did visually scan the gravel/dirt/trash where the snow pile was at the mall yesterday and using my eyes picked up about a dozen clad coins - no bills or jewelry, but your advice is spot on.

Happy hunting - will keep the forum posted as I continue my learning curve

You are right about the coins on edge! The shallow ones give that double ping too...you just hang in there for a little more!..I always try to get at least 100 coins on the count per 4 hrs, and a couple hundred targets investigated in the same time.. this year I'm locked in tight on the nickel tones..If the F70 says 32 its a nickel in the top 3"...if the number is solid but soft and falls off into the high 20's its a nickel in the 5" range..at least with my settings and soil. I did get a great gold ring last year right at 32, and couldn't stab the suspected nickel easily, so luckily I took my time and found that ring down in the grass roots. I bet I stood up and rescanned 3 times before I found it. You try those DP tones yet?

good hunting mud i know what you mean about the gold its been a long while for me too should warm up in a few weeks hh

Dang, Mr. Mud... whatatrooper! And here I have been complainin' (I would've said p1$$'n, but that might be a little brash) and moanin' about having to get my hands muddy diggin' around really old home places. The sounds my F5 make are definitely different in the rain soaked "mud" than normal soil. But then again, I learn a bit more each time I go out. Luckily, I can hunt within a hundred yards of my house at two old places and replinish my coffee and warm up my fingers regularly.

BTW, Out here in the sticks, we don't have to find a bathroom to "squirt", just face away from the road, or find a nearby cedar tree and "let 'er fly". :surprised:
