Hello everyone. Finally got some time to get the finds from last Saturday and Sunday cleaned up and posted. So let's get this started shall we.
Saturday, Tim and I headed out together since Dale couldn't tag along this time...Dale and his wife had tickets to go see Elton John and Billy Joel so he just couldn't sneak away. Tim and I tried a Park and I found a couple Wheats and Tim found a Wheat and 2 Indian Heads. I also found the Hunters Education Pin here.
After awhile, we decided to go check out a spot that was once a huge gathering spot but is no longer used as one. We had drove in and checked the place out early in the morning but there was no one around to see if it was privately owned property or what it was used for now so we tried the Park first. On the way back, I seen a White Pickup sitting in the driveway entrance so we turned around and pulled in. There was a guy there doing some trimming of trees and shrubs so we chatted with him for a few minutes. We found out who owned the property and Tom told us that he worked for the guy. We asked if it would be alright to do some metal detecting and Tom said go ahead, he didn't think the owner would mind either. So we drove in and parked and got the gear out.
Instantly, me and Tim started getting good signals all over the place but soon found out that a lot of them were Screw Caps but there were Coins here also. We both must have dug at least 100 of them Screw Caps each and Tim was getting sick of them...heck, even I was. Tim scored the first Silver which was a Rosie and we both started to find a few Wheaties also. I didn't think we would do that well here until later in the day when things started to pick up a bit...at least for me.
Tim did weasel out a Buffalo Nickel that should have been mine but I somehow missed it. It was in one of my plugs that I had dug where I found 2 Merc's in the same hole, so Tim was happy I left him at least something. He needed a Nickel for the upcoming Find Of The Month so he was pretty happy. I needed one too so the pressure was on!
We were hoping to land some Halves but that never happened...at least not on this trip. Tim wanted to go around Noon since he wasn't having too much luck in Silver finds but I was. I'm not sure what the totals were that Tim had but he must have had his share of Wheats. He only had the 1 Silver Rosie also. For me, it was a totally different story though. I had 2 Silver Quarters, 2 Barber Dimes, 3 Merc's, and 2 Rosie's along with 1 Indian Head and 20+ Wheats, and this was all before 1:00pm in the Afternoon. I told Tim if he wanted to go somewhere else, that was fine. The Coins were here but I don't think he wanted me to kill him on Silver Finds for the day here alone so we headed out to another spot to see if Tim's luck would change.
The third site was a Fairgrounds. We started hunting this and it didn't look too promising at first but as we worked it, a few things started to come out. I'm not certain on the totals here but I know Tim found a Barber Dime, another Rosie, and a few Wheats. I found a few more Wheats here along with a few Misc. Items and got 1 Merc and 3 Rosie's before we left this spot. Tim couldn't believe the luck I was having and it was about time someone kicked his butt since the last 2 weeks he was kicking mine and Dale's butt with Silver finds.
We the tried another Small Park. Only thing found was a Rosie by me.
We only tried it for 10 minutes since it looked pretty screwed up and Tim was starting to get desperate since it was around 3:00pm or so and he still only had 3 Silver. So we moved onto another location.
We tried yet another Park where Tim had found 2 Indian Heads, some Wheats, and a Merc and Rosie 2 weeks ago. I started where he had found some of them and was able to snag a Wheatie and a Merc from this spot. I went down the hill and on the way up, I found a Rosie. Tim I don't think found anything and I told him let's try the other Park since some Old Stuff was found there last time.
We arrived and started working this other Park. The Targets are very few and far between in area's but Tim seemed to walk into an area where there was a Tribe waiting for him. I found 2 Wheats, an Indian Head, a V-Nickel, and a Token here before we called it a day. Tim on the other hand found around 8 Indian Heads here, one being an 1867! He told me that he had an Indian Head that I could try to beat and told me the Date. I pretty much gave him the "Salute"
and kept hunting. Soon after we packed it in and headed home.
Even though Tim didn't get a load of Silver...he did kick my butt in Injuns and he was lucky to get that 1867 that starts out in G-4 for around $50.00. He only found 3 Silver this outing but I am sure this weekend, he will get more than that.
I had 15 Silver for the day, 2 Injuns, a V-Nickel, a few Misc Items, a Token, and about 30 Wheats or so. Pretty good outing this time around.
Sunday, it was Dale's turn to see what he could find so we hooked up around 10:00am and headed out. We tried a Fairgrounds and soon found out that it was all messed up, hardly anything for New Coins there also. So we moved on.
There was a Park nearby so we tried this. No Old Coins found here either but I did find a near Throwing Star.
We then went across town to another Park and Dale only found 1 Wheatie here. I didn't find anything old here so we moved onto another spot.
We come across a Country Church and a Town Hall on the way to another neighboring town so we drove down to check them out. I got out and tried the Town Hall but you could see that ground was really bumpy and I knew the chances of finding anything would be next to impossible here. We then pulled into the Church Yard and it was mostly Driveway. Dale was about to drive off until I told him to stop. I told Dale I wanted to try along the line of tree's here since it was grass and next to the parking area. I got out and within a minute or so, I got a Wheatie Signal. Dug it and it was a Wheatie in the Teens. I then kept walking and soon pulled a 17 Merc. I told Dale and he started working the area a bit also. I pulled 6 Wheats and the Merc here before we left. Dale only found 1 Wheatie.
We got to a Ball Field where I had found some Older Coins at last year so we decided to give it a try. I told Dale that the Coins were very deep since fill was added. We were only finding a few Clad until I got along the road coming into the Ball Field. I then found a Wheatie, then a Rosie. Then another Rosie. I told Dale and I really shouldn't have but I did and he then started working the area further down. By the time we left, we both had a few Wheats and some Silver. Dale pulled a Dateless Standing Liberty Quarter and 3 Silver Dimes being a Merc and Rosie's. I got a nice Kid's Watch out in the outfield that still works that has stones around the face and on the band itself, a Silver Quarter, and a couple Silver Dimes as well with a few Wheats. If I hadn't told Dale, I would have gotten another 10 Silver on Sunday but I can't have it all......can I???
The Silver total for both days were 21. I got 3 Washington Quarters dated 40,46-d,64, 2 Barber Dimes dated 11-s,13, 8 Merc's dated 16,17,(2)17-s,26,28,37,44-s, and 8 Roosevelt Dimes dated 46,46-d,47,49-d,50-d,62-d,63-d, and 64-d. 1 Nickel was found and it was a Liberty V-Nickel dated 1911. I also found 2 Tokens, 1 being a No Cash Value type with a Clown on the face and the other being a Good For 5c In Trade. This one someone grinded off the other side so business or town is unknown. I found 2 Indian Heads dated 05 and 07. There were 50 Wheats found during these 2 days, they being (2)10,13,(2)14,(2)18-d,(4)19,(2)19-s,24,25,26-d,26-s,28,(3)29,(4)29-d,32-d,34,(2)35-d,(2)36-d,37,38,39,40-d,44,(2)44-d,(2)45,45-d,(4)46-d,47-s,49-d,53-d,55-d and 56-d. The Misc. Finds were 1 Kid's Watch that still works, 3 Keys, a Throwing Star
, a small Bell, a Lighter, 2 pieces of Rings, another piece from Jewelry, another Full Junk Ring, a Pin, a Religious Pendant, a Graduate South Dakota Hunter Education Game Fish & Parks Pin, and a So. Dakota Young Citizens League Pin.
Now that's a lot of stuff!!!!
Enjoy!!! Good Luck and HH to you all.
