Hello again! Here is the finds I got this last Saturday and Sunday. Tough hunting on Sat. but Sunday was a totally different ballgame for the time I spent detecting.
Saturday, Tim and I decided to head South and go try out a large Fairgrounds thinking that there should be some goodies still there. We didn't head there right away though.
First stop was at a Ball Diamond with Football Field and Park area. It looked old enough for Silver but it also looked as if there had been some ground work done which was the case on the Football Field. We hunted this spot for about an hour tops.....with minimal results. Tim got a Merc and a Wheatie. I got a Merc as well and 2 Wheats. The Park area was under water so if there is more coins here, that's the spot where they will be. The Ball Diamond also had some work done to it and had very few targets and Clad at that.
Second site we stopped at was where a School was once in a small town. It was converted into a Park area and the School had a marker that was dated 1914. Only finds here were 2 Wheats which Tim and I had found 1 of each. Some Clad was also found but not much.
Site 3 was an Old Ball Diamond in a small town, the town was barely even in existence anymore since there was maybe 6 houses if that. Tim did better than I did here with about 8 Wheats, 2 Injuns and a Token from that town. All I could find was a Horse Head and 2 Wheats.
Site 4 was the Fairgounds. We got a late start here and the size of the place just filled our heads with tons of finds but that wouldn't be the case. We hunted this for a few hours and found a few keepers. There is so much area here that it would take years to cover and I'm sure there is a lot of goodies still waiting to be found. Tim ended up getting only a few Wheats here. I popped out a 1899-O Barber Dime, 3 Injuns, and some Wheats. I also found a Gold Plated Ring and a flattened Penny.
Site 5 and 6 were the last stops for the day and both were Parks in this town with the Fairgrounds. Not too much was found here either. I got an Aluminum Token with some script of the Bible on it, a Junk Ring and a Wheatie. Tim got a Wheatie and that was it other than a few Clad. Tough day of hunting on Saturday and just shows that the sites are getting harder and harder to find with the Old Coin Quantity like last year.
Sunday, I did a little checking on some sewer replacement since Tim had heard a rumor about a certain town having some done and after about a half hour or so I found a little info about it. I got the gear ready and headed to the town thinking it was going to be a good day detecting with hopefully a lot of good finds.......but that wasn't the case when I arrived. As soon as I approached town, I seen orange barricades and I had visions of torn up streets and ripped up sidewalks but that wasn't the case at all. Drove thru town disappointed in seeing that they were only replaceing the manhole sections and other small sections with nothing ripped up for me to detect. After seeing this, I thought now what! Where to go from here.
Decided to go to a neighboring town where I had gotten some Barbers from the Park there a few years ago but knew it was going to be a tough hunt since last time there I only got a Barber Dime and a couple Wheats. Arrived at the Park and started swinging. This was a late start in hunting Sunday due to taking my time and no real hurry to get anywhere fast. Got started shortly after 1:00pm. Hunted the Park for a good solid hour and a half too two hours before getting my first keeper. Got towards the North End of the Park where I dug a few Deep Wheats and an Indian Head before and got a Deep Target that gave a bad Warble and the numbers were just about everywhere. Decided to dig it due to it being in the higher numbers on Digital and from around 10" or so out pops a Penny. Picked it up and it was a 1900 Injun. Hunted around this area a bit more and got some Super Deep Signals that made Warble Signals sound good. Dug those and they turned out to be Wheats all down about 10"-11" Deep. Hunted a bit more and decided to go along the Sidewalk where I had pulled a lot of Barber From the second time to this Park a few years ago.
Popped out another Super Deep Wheatie here dated 1913. Hunted down the boulevard and decided to try the inside of the Park more.
Only thing I got was what I thought was a Coin but has a hole drilled in it and haven't cleaned it up yet to see what it exactly is.
I then decided to head back towards the car and go try somewhere else. On the way back to the car I came across a Wheatie Signal next to where a trench had been dug and some metal culvert or something was put in. I dug a plug and the dirt was super hard packed. I scraped and scraped and loosened the dirt. I then started to toss the dirt out of the hole and the next thing I see is a Silver Disc land in the pile. My eyeballs almost popped out of my head when I seen it was a Quarter. Picked it up and it was an 1897 Barber Quarter. How in the heck is this thing still here I thought. I then covered the hole and went down the side about 20' and decided to go on the other side of the trench and head back towards where I just dug the Quarter. Got a good 28 that showed about 4" Deep and dug the plug. Mercury Dime pops out. Couldn't believe it! Hunted a bit more and nothing.
I then started heading back towards the car and when I came across the Sidewalk here, I decided to go down this one and see if I couldn't find anything before I left. I know that Dale and Randy had worked this area with them finding some keepers years ago so I didn't think I was going to find much of anything. I went down the edge of the Sidewalk and nothing. I then decided to follow the bushes that were about 6' from the Sidewalk as I headed back towards the car. Got about 1/4th the way down and got a 28 on Digital that showed about 6" Deep. Dug a plug thinking possibly a Wheatie and I hit a solid piece of concrete. Put the probe in and it sang out. Scraped the dirt out with my hand and there in the pile was a 1906 Barber Dime. Another Barber I thought!!! Kept working towards the car and got about 1/2 down the Sidewalk and got another 28 on Digital but around 8" or so Deep. Dug a plug and out pops a 1913 Barber Dime. This was getting crazy since this Park has been pounded and there is even a detectorist from here and couldn't figure out why he hadn't found this stuff. Got over by a Light Pole and got a Screamer of a Signal. Thought about checking Smart Find to see where it was going with the Cross Hairs but decided to surprise myself whatever it maybe. Dug the plug and from around 10" Deep out comes another Silver. 1901 Barber Quarter! I then sat there shacking my head thinking what the heck is going on here! How is this possible??? Headed down the other section of Sidewalk and got a Deep 25 on Digital. Dug that and an Old Badge surfaced that reads Officer 666 on it. I then headed to the car and was about to put the detector away but then decided to check a small area where it was dug up next to the road. Got a 30 on Digital and shallow so dug it thinking Clad Quarter and popped out a Silver Ring. It was 6:00pm, I then left the Park and was heading home until I ran into another spot.
Thought I seen some kind of building out in the distance on the way back and couldn't make it out. Decided to turn around and go see what it was. As I headed towards it, I asked myself "is that a Church?". It was cloudy out and hard to tell but as soon as I asked myself that, the clouds parted and the Steeple lighted up like a sign from God saying, "come visit my place of worship and be rewarded". It was just an awesome thing to see happen just as I had finished asking myself that and will never forget it. I pulled up to the building and the Older Church was gone but a Marker was on the newer one saying it was on the site from 1883-1950. There was a parking area across from the Church that I decided to try. First signal was Trash. Second Signal was a 1906-d Barber Dime. Thought it was going to be loaded but it wasn't. Got a couple Wheats, Jefferson Nickel and an Older Junk Ring. Church Yard itself was pretty much headstones. Parking area was township owned after asking a passer byer wondering what I was doing. After an hour here I Headed home.
All in all Sunday sure turned out to be a surprise of good finds from a pounded Park. Just wonder what else is there and maybe will do another hunt there later in the fall when it's cooler out.
Total of finds is as follows. 8 Silver were found, them being 2 Barber Quarters dated 1897 and 1901, 4 Barber Dimes dated 1899-o,1906,1906-d and 1913, and 2 Mercury Dimes dated 1942-s and 1944. Only 1 Nickel found and it was a 1958-d Jefferson Nickel. 4 Indian Heads were found and dated 1897,1900 and (2)1904. For Wheats I dug only 13 of them. They were dated 13,19,20,26,26-d,27,38-s,41-d,44-d,(2)46-d,57-d and 58-d. For Misc. Finds, I got an Old Officer Badge with 666 on it, a Horse Head, 2 Junk Rings, a Gold Plated Ring, a .925 Silver Ring, a Whatzit item that is holed and was at one time larger but cut down, an Aluminum Token with some Religous Phrases and a flattened Penny that is unidentifiable. Well.....that does it once again for another of my postings. Hope you enjoyed this post and the finds and hope everyone gets out this upcoming weekend and makes a few good finds. Until next time......Best of Luck and HH to you all!
