Latest Assessment of the SE

Hi Guys,
Yesterday I hit a small patch of lawn (About 100ft by 50ft) that runs along a place where they hold an outdoor market every week. I did this same lawn with the EX II last April and picked up $85.00, this time with the SE I picked up another $73.02 in clads, a gold plated cricket bat, a gold locket and a Tassie Tiger's badge. I searched in all metal, sensitivity 5 and the SE let me know everything that was in the ground, there's a million crown caps in this patch and the SE cross hairs hit in the right place every time. I'm really beginning to think the enhansements over the EX II are a real plus.
The day befor I returned to a sand dune that was always good for a few Pre Decimal coins where I had previously searched extensively with the EX II and found the Pre Dec coin shown shown in the lower picture and once again the SE was able to grab coins that I had missed with the EX II.
All the best.....Boony
PS THe Bong nozzle cam from the sand dune.

Do you have the x-1 probe? That is real handy for those almost surface targets, I use it to pinpoint before I even dig a plug on those and then just use a coin popper to pop the coin out. Real handy at newer bus stops, play grounds and such.

HI digitrich,
Yes I do use the X1 as you say it's mighty tool, the take for the year ended up at a little over $1300 in clads, that and the $1226 I got for the EX II on Ebay paid for the SE with a bit left over.
The clads certainly add up over a period of time, I can't wait for the heavies to mint a $5 coin then we can really start to recover some serious cash. All the other stuff like the gold and silver rings and jewelery etc are just a nice little bonus, it really is a great hobby and needs protection from these people that would can us if they had half a chance. I have a really good relationship with our local councils as I take all the rubbish I dig out of the parks, I emailed them a picture of the mountain of trash I recovered and they were thrilled to bits. However I have had a completely negative response from our local National Parks and Wild life people they hate detectorists with a vengeance and I feel that this is their loss as the relics stay in the ground never to be seen. Their attitude is a bit sad.

Boony, that's a terrific result...:clapping:

Ya can't beat our high denomination "goldies" eh!

Say,it's great to see you're still finding the old pre-decimal stuff.

Hi Snowy,

Yes there's still a bit of pre dec to find it's nice to get that high silver ring, I find that the coins up in the dry sand dunes seem to be in a lot better condition than the ones found in wet sand.
And yes it's nice to pick up a bit of spending money on the side, I really don't mind if they make $10 or even $20 coins I reckon it would be great, however I think we would have a bit more competition with the detectors.

Wow! Everybody around here ought to know I am a major proponent of LOWERING the sensitivity...I've said it many times. But I'm usually talking like 16, 18, 20...but 5??? I was real surprised to see that. Any reason SO low? Because of the trash? What would be the max depth you saw at sens 5? What were your other settings? I'm always interested in hearing some of the more unconventional approaches that folks use and I know they can often work very well. I've never heard of anybody running THAT low. I imagine in an area that had shallower targets of interest over say heavy iron, it could be a huge help. Or perhaps in areas with a lot of close trash?

HI Mike,

The main reason for the low sensitivity is that I'm not permitted to dig holes in the parks, consequently I only search the surface, however that said with the millions of crown caps and pull tabs in our parks I find that the lower sensitivity helps sort through the trash, I have also found that once an item is in the ground it doesn't seem to go much deeper that a couple of inches so in my case there's not much advantage in searching deeper, on the beach I run the sensitivity as high as I can go and maintain stability.
And yes the bomb is for the complaints I will have to put a number on the ring so the complainants can take a number.
All the best......Boony

Sure must be fun digging all that Clad especially when there is higher Denominations than our U.S. Coin Currency and in good quantity. I take it that the 1916 Coin you found is made from Silver since it shines well unlike the other coins. Very nice haul Boony! Good Luck and HH on your next trip out.

Hi James,

All our Pre Decimal silver coins ranged from 50% to 92.5% silver and it's sure nice to dig them. That particular sand dune in Hobart has been a great place for the old pre decs, the earliest one I have pulled out was a 1812 English threepence, unfortunately it wasn't in very good condition but still nice to find. I'm still a bit envious of you guys picking up those nice big silver dollars over there, they are a very nice coin. I'm still living in hope to scratch up a gold sovereign one day, in the mean time the $1 and $2 clads certainly add up.

Regards....Boony
