Laws concerning MDing

cjw

New member
I just got a MD and I'm wondering if there are laws that apply to MDing. Are there legal concerns?

I tried to 'Google' ...Canadian Laws On Metal Detecting and did not find any useful info.

Do you know of any websites that give the laws / restrictions concerning the use of M.Detectors? ( I live in Canada)

We have several Canadians on this forum. They have no problems and can fill you in. What kind of areas do you hunt? If they are public areas they would most likely be posted if MD'ing was prohibited. Check with the Parks Department and the School District about schools and parks.

Up here in my part of the country , Parks, School yards, Playgrounds, Beaches, Soccer fields, Baseball fields, Fair grounds or most places where
people gather are accessible. Another good area is along sidewalks to the road curb, not on peoples property.
Having said that if the places are fenced off likely not permitted unless you ask.
Just make sure that you leave the site better than you encountered it and fill your holes and take out any junk you dig up.
Leave no foot print that you were there.
If you can get permission to go dig on private property you may find some great stuff..
Good luck the ACE 250 will find you plenty of targets and yes some people will make it there only detector.
Learn it thoroughly and graduate to a higher end detector later on.
National Parks are off limits.

Be thankful you are in Canada. The craze of more areas being off limits (and against the LAW) for metal detectorists is increasing daily here in the states. I live in Austin, Texas where it is now against the LAW to hunt in our city parks (over 200 of them!), our county parks and in any state park. Not long ago Houston, Texas followed suit in their city parks (again - hundreds of their parks). Always do as Uncle Willy says and contact the apprpriate officials for confirmation. AND get their name and other information to have handy if someone happens to stop and talk about your MDing. I (and other local detectorists here in my area) have to use a lot of gas, time and money driving to surrounding cities and counties who don't have these riduculous laws. (Yet) I know of nowhere in Texas that signs are posted to prohibit Metal Detecting. (Except Padre Island National Seashore) But you will get approached awful fast by someone who will not hesitate to tell you about the laws here concering MDing.
Do not let any of this discourage you. You live in a great country for Metal Detecting. Learn how to use your detector and enjoy the hobby. You will love it!

Lordy I'm so happy that I live in the Northwest where detecting ain't prohibited anywhere and the ocean beaches are publically owned.

I couldn't find any 'restrictions' when I did a 'Google' on Canadian laws.

When I read the comments here.....it appears that the laws are 'liberal' concerning MDing in this area. ( Ontario Canada)

thanks for the comments.

Hi Uncle Willy:
What part of the North West.
I lived in Seattle Washington before moving to Indiana.
Lord I wish I were back in Seattle There are some
places I know that I would Love to detect, but
I've got to hang here for my grandchildrens sake.

Live in Portland. Not quite as wet as Seattle but wet enough after living in Arizona, Nevada, California, and such. But the country is so mind boggling beautiful in the summer and I'd miss the mountains and millions of acres of forest anywhere else. I was born and raised in Illinois and I couldn't wait to get out of there way back when. I left there in 1955 and never looked back. Only returned twice, once when my mom was ill and again to bury her. Didn't lose a thing back there.

Bill.

Come on up. Some of the most beautiful country in the world up here and a coast line to match. We have mountains over two miles high up here and the deepest canyon in the U.S. at over 6000 feet deep.

Hey Bill

Was just there(Portland) for my youngest daughters wedding. I lived there from Dec 1978 till Feb 2005 when I got put out to pasture at 52 due to health reasons. I'm now living in my wife's home country of Chile and doing research on md's for a new hobby. This place is ripe for finding all sorts of treasure since there aren't many people down here with md's. Wish me luck and hope to meet you in PDX someday. Now off to research the laws in Chile......Lalo(Ed)

I will go to Orlando FL, en April for two weeks, and I wonder if I should take my detector with me. I do not know about the laws in Florida. I am thinking to hunt in parks, playgrounds or places like these, and may be at some beach. Furthermore, I am Mexican, and I do not know if this makes a difference.

Please help me to decide

Thanks

Being Hispanic makes no difference. Contact the Orlando Chamber of commerce and ask them about any laws you may need to know about concerning your metal detecting. HH

im in orlando, we have no laws concerning md ing..bring your detector....look me up when you come...ill hunt with you..:clapping::detecting:

Here you need to get permits for parks usually have to go to ranger headquarters to do paper work.City doesn't want you in there parks though there is no written law they can try damage to public property. The state park along lake erie you can only hunt on beach and believe me don't let them catch you turning on machine before you are on the beach. But you can bring kids with buckets and shovels and they can dig holes as big and deep as they want any where they want hmmmmmm.Different laws in every state and city city next to me don't let them catch you in park or schoolyard take your stuff and fine you . Some city here have a noise law on car radio equipment to loud so many decibels take your stuff fine you if can be removed you can pick it up later at police department.

they sure think it is there property. and will make an issue about it with you.

Put on a White hard hat and a blaze orange vest and you'll look like a city supervisor looking for property pegs :laugh:

Impersonating a bureaucrat is a serious civic offense... :starwars:whenever I see one of those bureaucrat persons, I'm seriously offended!

I don't know about there, but where I'm at (Calif.) the local metal detecting club site post the local laws/rules/regulations. Most public parks are fair game with a few exceptions, and in one city I detect, the Parks & Recreation Dept requires a permit which is good for a year. They have one Historical park that's off limits and the others are okay. The permit does not apply to schools & other business.
Some federal lands may have restrictions.
One of the local lakes has a section where relics are not to be disturbed.
