Lead question...

Does anyone know what kind of lead stock was used for bullet making? I found these lead pieces in a small area about 20 by 20 feet and the fired Enfield was nearby. There has never been any kind of structure near here. Some of these have been sliced. Thanks for any help.

I would venture to say probably softer types maybe for faster melt time just my guess. Howard

pure lead melts fastest added tin to make it harder.looks like you found what is called the spur(the part that is cut off after making the bullet) so you might have found a fire pit
area where thay sat and made bullets at night/day might be worth using a probe to see if you can find any bottles too

Does anybody have any suggestions for making a probe to find bottles and stuff? I went to the local hardware and they had some smooth pieces of steel, but I could not figure out how to make a handle for the thing?

I saw an inspector for septic tanks using a nice probe. He got it from a Forestry Service vendor. Might pay to check it out.

I use the spring steel from the trunks of cars from the 70s. There are two 4 foot long rods that provide tension to hold the trunks open. I use a 1 inch diam, 2 foot long pipe as the handle. The only draw back is that they are only 4 feet long. I weld a nut about 1 inch from the tip to give me a sample of what I am probing.

If you need more info pm me.
