Learn mode on Explorer XS

Hey fellas,
I have a question on the learn mode on my Explorer XS. When I'm in the learn mode to teach my detector different coins does it make any difference if the coin is say one inch from the coil or four or five inches away in the learning process? I don't recall anyone ever asking this question before and I was wondering if the distance from the coin to the coil would have anything to do with actually picking up the same coins out in the field either shallow or deep? Any comments might clear this up for me and maybe anyone else who may have had the same question. Thanks and HH.

Eddie

The correct way to learn in a target is turn the sensitivity to 1 in manual and go in and out with the target or up and down if the target is on the ground, not back and forth across the coil. The reason for the low sensitivity is so it don't pick up any stray signals and mess up your pattern. The reason to go in and out at the center of the coil is so the edges of the coil don't also pick up the signal too and mess up you pattern. Now as you see it will make no difference is you are 3 ,4 or 5 inches away as you will be going in and out when it is being learned.

Thanks Rick. It makes sense to me to do what you suggested and I will give it a try. I knew someone out there would have the answer and I didn't see any replies with anyone disagreeing with you thoughts. Thanks again. HH.

Basically done on a picnic table in the back yard not inside you home using Rick's method
should learn the target more precisely and putting same on ground just may alter the process due to a close junk target...Whoops make sure on that table you don't have any nails closeby in the consruction of the table. For gosh sakes do take off that jewelry on the hand holding the object to be learned...

Rick,

My preference is to turn the sensitivity down as you suggested and then use the X1 probe. My thinking is that you are less likely to contaminate the learn process with any surrounding metal or electrical interference. After the learn process, then you can go back to the detect mode using the search coil along with your preferred sensitivity setting. Then check to see how effectively you can detect the "learned" target with the target at various distances from the coil.

I can see some advantage in placing the target on the ground (after you have made sure that there are no targets in close proximity). Placing the target on the ground where you expect to hunt has the advantage of taking the ground mineralization into account.

What are your thoughts about this.

HH,
Glenn

I agree if you have a X1 probe as it does make it easier to do a pattern with less interference, but if you don't than the coil is your only option.
Myself I have never tied to build a pattern with a coin on the ground, but what you say may make a big difference if setting a close pattern as it can use the ground condition for the site you want to detect. I use the X1 probe myself when I do a pattern for nickle, but for everything else I use edit and open or close what ever I want to learn or reject . I get what I want and whatever is close to what that item reads as many coins close to other coins will not read in the pattern you have learned.,
