Learning my MD but still would like more knowledge

HI
As posted I got a Bounty Hunter Lone Star along with a junior for the wife. She hasnt used hers much due to the weather . But using mine , I was at a fair grounds messing with it and noticed that certain rocks give a sound. I was using the disc. mode and sensitivity up high but still getting sound. I can only get 3 distinct sounds out of it a low, medium, and high. I tried digging in the gravel rocks when a sound came up but found nothing. I did however find some coins in another part of the parking lot where there was a different type of gravel and rocks. Question: does certain rocks have a metal characteristic ? Here in Arkansas we are kinda short on rocks ( a joke) any where and everywhere you go there is rocks here, either imported to parking lots or home grown in the fields. I also notice that at times the read out and the sound bounce from like 5 cent silver to gold to trash when I go over a spot and nothing there , whats that ? I only wish I could go out with someone who knows and experienced and be along side for side beside hands on learning

Your getting false signals...Try turning down the Sensitivity a bit...to about noon....I have found that you can never turn the SENS up all the way...Keep your swing speed slow and steady (About 2 feet per second)...Keep coil about 1-2" off and LEVEL with the ground (especially if you have rocky soil)...Do not lift the coil at the ends of your sweeps (pendulum swinging)...Make sure your signals will repeat with multiple passes of the coil over the target (If the signal changes, it is most likely trash)...The Lone Star only has 3 tones of audio (low for iron, nickel, foil, and pull tabs...Medium for screw caps, gold, zinc...and High for silver, copper, aluminum cans, clad coinage, large objects)...If it did not come with your package...go to:

http://www.detecting.com/

and send an email to them asking for an instructional video on your Lone Star (make sure to include your name and address)...If they have it, They will usually send one out to you...The folks at First Texas are just great with stuff like that...If they do not have it, I think I still have mine from my 202/505...You can have it for postage cost...let me know in PM)...There are BTW some rocks that can set off a detector...They are called "HOT Rocks" These can have metal in them, or just be hotter than the surrounding ground and give a signal...it is usually a VERY rare occurrence though...

That's right, those are false signals. When the sensitivity knob is on high, it means less filtered/more noise. All the way to the left is more filtered/less noise.

Two settings I like are 1) DISC with both knobs set to the spot where the dots change color, this gives me a repeatable starting point so when I get confused I can reset easily and 2) Auto Notch with both knobs fully to the left (CCW). This is good if you just want to scan the top inch or two for coils and jewelry after a recent gathering.

Manual

I use my BH-505 in much the same.. I always start out with the Sens. at about the noon position.. and
Disc. setting about the same and then work from there. If AI start to get a lot of false signals i will even
adjust sens lower until they stop... I have never had any luck with the Sens. adjusted all the way
sometimes made it OK to the 2 or 3 position....

Hay Leesumm,

Most "Hot Rocks" in Arkansas are are of two types.

There are rocks with an iron content. They may be reddish or have reddish markings.

The other common " Hot Rock " is mineralized rocks. Minerals vary in their content.
Some are not hot and others are very hot. They may contain varying amounts of iron.
Some don't have much of an iron content, but can still be " Hot ".

The reason they respond is because the ground balance on your metal detector is factory preset.
Getting a beep would suggest to me that the setting is a little positive. Having it go
quiet at times would suggest that the setting is a little negative.

Setting the sensitivity lower will lesson the effect of mineralized rocks and soil. It
reduces depth however. It will lesson the effects of iron rich rocks also. That's
because the actual iron content of most of them is relatively low. Just a little disc
can help with iron rich rocks.
