Folks,

My Safari will get another chance at the red-orange Culpeper soil starting Friday. We leave tomorrow, will be at the hunt meeting tomorrow night. then Friday through Sunday in the field. WooHoo!!!! We still don't know exactly where we will be digging, that info is released at the meeting. More than 450 diggers this time and just about every machine known to man.

Any other forum members attending?

Jerry,

This hunt is as much about camraderie as relic hunting so even if I don't find anything I'll have a great time. I do however hope to find that elusive CS Button or Plate :clapping:

Plus, the Sunday BBQ is almost worth the price of admission.

Back from DIV and I got SKUNKED!!!!!

The spot that our group settled in on was highway cone orange dirt that hid every target perfectly. I dug more than a hundred holes and came up empty. Rusted nails sounded exactly like buttons (12) and bullets (32/34) until they came out of the ground. One guy in our group was using a TDI and he killed the buttons, got nearly two dozen Federals including a very pretty overcoat Eagle "I" with lots of gold left. He also ran into a big copperhead but they decided to go different directions without mixing it up :yikes:

At one point I was talking to a gent that was using a Minelab GPX 4500 and was sure that I had located a button. He checked the target and agreed, button all the way. While I started digging he walked a few feet and called back that he had another where he was. We both dug our targets and both ended up with rusty nails!!!!!

Even though I came back empty I had a ball, great people and a great time in the VA hills. Plus I walked and climbed off about 5 pounds!

Sorry to hear you got skunked Tom. You would think that the FBS detectors would perform better than that in bad ground??????

Barry,

I dug a whole bunch of holes, all junk. At one point I ran into an Explorer user that said everything was backward on his machine. All the "good" target sounds were nails and the only relics he found read like trash. I dug at least 25 "smart nails" that were masquerading as bullets  The guys on that hillside that had the most luck were digging every signal, and were digging almost 9 junk holes for every find.

The parking lot cookouts and the Saturday trip to Pancho Villa's in town made up for not finding anything. Plus I had a chance to sit and talk to some of the east coast relic hunting legends on Saturday at the base. Great stories about their exploits and finds. At the meeting on Thursday they did an elimination to find the digger with the most experience, 7 guys had more than 50 years with the top being 57 (my age!!!!!).
