When I purchase an Infinium online, this December, should I order a lighter coil at the same time? I tried an Infinium at a store several years ago and the coil was so heavy that the detector seemed out of balance; is this still true? I am thinking that a mono or a smaller DD coil would be needed to balance the Infinium. True?

lightest, most useful Infinium coil?

Big DD is still heavy, The big Mono is light in comparison, is very sensitive and covers a wide search area. The 8 inch mono is very sensitive light and handles all ground very well, a great coil. The 5 x 10 DD is very light, handles elec interference very well, great at the beach if you are not looking for super deep items,is not as sensitive as the small mono, is great in mineralised ground, the toe of this coil has a hot spot that is good on small gold. The 3 x 7 DD is good in high trash areas, good on small gold but lacks depth (coz it is small), is great in mineralised ground and handles elec interference very well.
A straight rod will make handling the machine a lot easier regardless of the coil.
I made this one and it wasn't all that hard to do.

For in the salt water I like the 8" Mono and have done well with it for depth and pin-pointing!
It has worked well too in wet sand at the water's edge.
If the dry sand has had heavy hunting the Infinium will find the deep stuff missed by other machines, but be prepared to do a lot of digging as PI machines can find the tiniest bits of metal!!
Even with the "Reverse Discrimination" feature you can't be sure if the signal is something that you want to pass!
It will be a challenge to learn because of its sensitivity and the need to set it up for different locales plus the electrical interference which it can tune out!
There is a wealth of info here and at the Garrett's Prospector Forum for you to learn from.
It is the most versatile PI detector I know of!

No coil is heavy if you balance out the shaft setup, wether it's a straight shaft or an s bend. I have a straight shaft myself, the White's website has some cheap shaft accessories.

I also found the stock DD coil to be heavy, but the straight shaft helps balance it a little more.
I've been using the 8" mono and it's a fine coil around the beach!
But, I still want to try the 10x14 mono as I've only heard good things about it (funds have been tight, but one will be on ordered soon)!

The 8" mono would be my choice if I was to pick only one extra coil, due to it's ability to be used in the water and sensativity, although I have used my 5x10DD in chest high water, what a for arm workout that was. As CJ spoke of a more balanced shaft with a tether will make the 10x14DD easy to swing all day.
My shaft from coil to top is 62" tall and with a tether strap I have it balanced out, it almost swings itself with some hip action.

Coated the coil with a rubberized material made for tool handles which is very durable and highly visible.

Added the brace so I can "lean" on the machine while digging to keep my balance without worrying about having to re-align the coil each tome.
The brace adds very little drag and helps stabilize the swing.

This is a wonderful community and a great place to share info.Feel free to ask for advice at any time.Regarding which coil to get that is lighter than the stock coil, I would say that it really depends on the type of hunting that you'll be doing. When I'm prospectin' (nugget shootin') I prefer the 5"x10" double "D" because it handles mineralized ground well, has good ground coverage and is super light. When I'm surfin'(beach huntin') I usually use the 10"x14" mono coil because it is super light and gets good ground coverage and GREAT depth. Any search coil will do, though for whichever style of hunting you are doing, but those are my personal preferences. I have every search coil made (by Garrett) for the Infinium LS and that 10"x14" mono was my latest addition. I got it two or three months ago and I love it for the beach. I usually use that 5"x10" double "D" while nugget shootin', unless I'm in an area that is known for particularly large and deep nuggets. Then I'll use the stock 10"x14" double "D" and use a bungee/chest harness to help with the weight of the search coil.

My straight shaft is a metal broom handle that matched up better than my Garret shaft (tighter fit no wobble) it was just at my house, drilled out the holes removed some rust and painted it. If you can source some tubing metal, alum. or fiberglass you can make a go of it. My shaft was the right size so I could use a bike handle bar extension for the grip.

I have an Infinium with all the available coils, and tend to use the 8" mono the most. I recently got a 5X10 DD for it, and was curious as to just how much depth loss I can expect with that coil as compared to the 8" mono. I use the infinium at the beach on occasion, but use it mostly in REAL (bright red iron laden) hot soil. Garrett claims the 5X10 should get more depth than the mono in really bad soils, but I cant quite bring myself to go with that, just from what i have seen myself. What are your findings with both coils in difficult dirt? Thanks in advance...
PS: at a hunt I went to recently (in that real hot dirt)...all the monos falsed really really really bad after it rained and saturated the ground and got the grass wet, but some of the big DD users said theirs didnt false at all. I'm assuming the 5X10 will help with this wet falsing (the reason I got it). Again.......any input appreciated........................ NE digger..

On the other hand If you can tolerate the mono ground noise then it still may get better depth than the DD. I have not found ground here in Australia where I have not been able to run the small Mono, but I understand that there is some ground in QLD and WA that challenge it a bit. Overall, it is a great little coil.

I asked the question because or a situation where we encountered severe falsing with the 8' monos in very hot soil after a rain. it made the infiniums almost unuseable. If the 5X10 coil will run quieter in that set of circumstances, than it will be worth its weight in gold, even with the loss of depth. thank you again for your response......... NE Digger

As per Garrett instructions, the hot ground you're dealing with would probably need the DD type coil. I would think the machine should run smoothly with the proper coil selection as it was designed to work anywhere.
I would like to hear from others that have hunted in red hot clay as I've heard the machine can work very well in that environment too.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!
The pipe is beveled on one side (I used a hand saw) after carefully determining how much of an angle I needed to allow it to lay snug against the shaft at that angle.
There is a hole 4" or so from the end of the taper that allows a plastic electrical tie to hold the brace secure and then the taper is wrapped with electrical tape to really anchor it in place.
The other end is fitted to the curve of the coil and is tied to the coil by an electrical plastic tie.
The coil has had many hours of use as you see it and is still perfectly secure.
