Some of you may have seen these on the E-Trac or AT Pro forum. Would like to know what you think about these.

A buddy and I thought we would make our own digging tools so this is what we came of with.

Thanks for the comment.

The cupped design was intentional. We wanted a digger that would dig a plug and also allow us to pull the dirt from the hole beyond the plug without trying to dip it out with a flatter blade or our hands. This thing digs like a post hole digger and makes a nice round deep hole.

As far as a cushioned handle, I thought about that myself but it is very comfortable to use as it is. I may put some bat tape on it later but with the guard and the pommel on the end it is very comfortable and easy on the hands as is.

It has been enjoyable to come up with our own digging tool and playing around with ideas. I Like hearing the opinions and comments of others.

Thanks again

hey bcoop --

If you say the handle is comfortable, then maybe the cushion is not needed.

And, I hear you very clearly about scooping the dirt. I use a narrower, more knife-like digger, but I do carry a plastic digger with a more tight radius for just the reason you mentioned -- to scoop that extra dirt out of the hole once you remove the initial plug. So I hear what you are saying. I guess my only thought is, with that tight of a radius, wouldn't your plug end up being really small (maybe 2 to 3 inches in diameter?) I'd need to improve my pinpoint skills! :)

Anyway, it seems like you have really thought this through, and it's a great-looking tool. Is it sturdy? No concerns about bending/breaking?

The complete digger is stainless steel with the blade being 409 stainless. I have done some digging and prying with it with no problems. The cupped design of the blade gives it strength so I think you would have to really do some major prying to bend this thing. The handle is pretty thick walled stainless pipe and is fitted in a hole drilled through the guard and tig welded thoroughly.

As far as digging a plug, you can dig whatever size plug you want to dig. from about a 3 inch diameter plug to 8 inch just increase the radius of your cuts. The pommel on the end of the handle with the guard can be used with 2 hands and I have pushed it into the ground all the way to the guard. That was with moisture in the ground, not soggy or muddy but not hard packed.

Been a lot of fun playing around with these.

Nice design. How is it on roots and is there enough room to step on it for extra force if need be? Finally, what is the overall length?

Thanks.

Blade= 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 inches long. Width 2 1/2 inches inside the cup of the blade

Handle is approximately 5 1/4 inches long measured from the top of the guard to the top of the pommel

Guard stick out about 1 inch from the center of the handle and about 1 1/4 of an inch to the left and right at the front corners.

Overall length of the tool is approximately 13 inches

No exact standard on the 3 tools that were built. They are all basically the same with slight differences due to using material that was available and building from scratch by hand.

The teeth are cut from a CNC machine and then hand sharpened, they will snag your clothes.

Nicely made .... stainless is the only way to go. BUT.... im not a fan of the tight radius either. I have a shovel made like that and i find i have to dig smaller holes because if i dig deep like i do with my knife to cut the flap.... it distorts the hole or really is very unclean. For me a little wider radius where i can still dig a flap rather than a hole works best. I find the same problem when i buy garden trowels.... some are just better suited to cutting a hole quickly and cleaner.
