Lobo ST

I just bought a like new Lobo St and I'm wanting to try my hand at nugget hunting , I believe I already have the basics down , I'm looking for any tips or tricks out there on how to use it looking for gold . Thanks

I owned a Lobo ST for years until I sold it for lack of use. It's definitely a "dig everything" machine and VERY sensitive. The farther away from civilization you can get the better because it will drive you nuts around trashy old mine sites or urban parks. Even in the wilds many a time I've spent a lot of time and effort on a promising signal only to eventually find a number eight birdshot in my gold scoop. However, at any reasonable depth it does find the gold, and I would put it up against any VLF machine out there! You have one of the best!

I have yet to use mine for gold but as for park hunting and such I ran in discrim mode with it at about 2.5-3 settin you can run in all metal and switch to discrim on target to determine if trash or not, the pinpointing is incredibly accurate on the machine. Pretty sure it will be one of my permanent collection machines.

I use discrimination so seldom I'd forgotten that my LST even had that mode! Discrimination is great if you're only wanting to find coins and silver but you are eliminating the lower part of the machine's capability, thus you will find no nickels nor any gold jewelry because they lie on the same part of the band as iron, aluminum pull tabs and other trash. I see a lot of "Snowbirds" come here in the winter, buy a detector and discriminate the heck out of it so they don't have to dig trash. They find some pennies and quarters but always wonder why they don't find any gold.

as stated I set it at 2.5 to 3 , 2.5 is the best setting i used and tested with small gold rings, silver rings and all coins without missing them, I bought thst machine for gold specifically but wanted to learn it a bit in depth.

There has been a lot of gold found in Alaska with the Lobo while in discriminate mode. You lose depth but in junk iron infested tailing piles it can be a godsend. Set the control to just break up on a small rusty nail, about 1.5 to no more than 2.0 on the dial. It is imperative that you not set the control any higher than absolutely needed as the higher you go the more gold you tune out. This will eliminate not only ferrous trash but most hot rocks. And yes, some gold also, but that is the trade you make. Try to dig it all whenever possible. http://www.detectorprospector.com/steves-mining-journal/metal-detecting-gold-ganes-creek-alaska.htm

Amen to that advice. Plusses and minuses to all units since inception of detecting. If I could trust the security of my truck better--broken into on numerous occasions--I'd carry 3-4 of my units and a dozen coils or so as ground conditions.cobble/boulder sizes, trash, hot rocks and on and on are all considerations. Get up-get out-and get ya some and run what ya brung as closet queen units find nuttn'-John

You must take heart because if there was any gold to be found in that spot--it'd be yours and it sounds off much better to a trained ear. Learn that great machine and your rewards will never end as guaranteed for life and that is indeed golden-John
