Howdy,
Nice day today, so took a quick trip during lunch for some fresh air at a local park. Still(!) continuing with the SE and 8x6 SEF, I again ambled down a line listening for small warbles from the deep.
Didn't find much in the short time, but did manage three Wheats. One in particular stood out, and just thought I'd share. I got a chirping tone that sounded pretty decent in one swing direction, and kinda survived while rotating 90 degrees, but not greatly so. I had a number of signals earlier that were pretty decent at one angle, but then would completely null when rotated either way off the initial sound. Due to time constraints, I passed those. But this one gave a few squawks, and one angle had a good warble, so I thought I probably had something.
I flipped up the plug, checked with the X-1, and got a repeat on the nice tone, but it sounded a little off. Nonetheless, I was able to recover a 1953-D Wheat. Not so remarkable, but here's the kicker: I flipped back the plug, tamped it all nicely back, and just to make sure I ran the coil over the spot again, right on top of the plug. Complete null. Rotated. Still complete null. Tried several other angles, and nothin' doin' - complete null.
Wow. The stuff is still out there hiding for sure. But not for long...
