Long Island Hunting?

Next Friday I'm driving my Mom to Long Island to visit her sister. They just gab a lot, so I'm going to have a bunch of down time. I'm thinking about making the effort to do a little detecting. Any of you Long Islanders have any advice? I believe I need a permit, is it worth paying the fee for a 3 hour hunt? Also, do you have any links or information about obtaining one?

Jai,,the cost to metal detect any Long Island State Park is $40.00...you can google it to find the listings of parks,,one of the best parks to metal detect if you do get the permit is Jones Beach State Park,,,,thousands go to the beach almost everyday when the weather gets warm,,,even with the permit, you do have to pay for parking which i bel is $8.00 unless you get there before 7 am,,permit is still needed. My suggestion to you is to go Long Beach,,,go early before 7 am ( they collect money to go on the beach after ) ...its free to metal detect there, gets crowded .....Do Not metal detect Eisnhower Park ,,its forbidden...if you are not sure,,,send a PM and i will try to answer your question,,,,HH,,,Tim
 
Wow, $48 for possibly a 3 hour hunt on the beach. Not sure if that fits my budget. I'll be leaving CT early in the morning, but it's still a 3.5 hour ride for me, so I probably would not be able to get to any beach until after noon. I may be able to detect for 2-3 hours before I'd have to meet back up with my Mom and Aunt. Ahh well. Can you detect a public schools etc without a permit?
 
Just love it when you get slapped with usage fees and restrictions on what can and can not be done on property bought and maintained by the tax payers . . . . . then you go to the beach and see junior digging a 4 foot deep hole yet detectorists are not allowed to use a scoop to recover a target and refill it . . .

Several years ago I was hunting a park in New Jersey and a park cop drove out over the grass - leaving tracks as he went - to pull up and tell me I had to leave because I was digging in the grass . . . . my comment about what he had just done to the grass probably did not help my case but it was funny to see what was acceptable in his eyes yet what I was doing was destroying the property.

There are some excellent sites not on the beach that are worth checking out - hopefully a local out there will be willing to meet up with you and spend a few hours "beeping"

Jai....you can detect schools ,,,unless posted,,,best on the weekends, ,,you might encounter soccer games ,,,older schools are on the north shore area but are protected by security fences,,i heard of a local on the north shore found a nice old gold coin in a park not too long ago. ,,,,,,HH,,Tim
