long overdue finds post

small change

New member
Haven't posted any finds on here in a couple of months at least. Have been active the most of the time, getting out most weekends. Have had some success here & there but also have had several hunts that were disappointments where I left with nothing old at all or left with no silver & maybe only a couple of wheats. I did find a ballfield next to a grade school (was a high school at one time) that was productive. I have managed to take about a dozen silver coins out of there along with a few Buffs, a few Indians, a V and 50-60 wheats. The rest of the finds are just from various parks & schools mostly. Its basically been "a few here & a few there", I haven't really had any spectacular hunts for quite a while.

Totals were: 1 Walker, 6 Quarters (2 SLQs & 4 Washingtons), 15 Mercs, 13 Rosies, 1 War Nickel, 3 V Nickels, 5 Buffaloes, 1 Shield Nickel (in awful shape with no chance of determining a date), 10 Jeffersons (before 1960), 6 Indian Cents, and 155 Wheats. Also found a couple of dog tags, and a few tokens.

I have found more silver coins this year than I did last year, so it is an improvement, but I just haven't done near as good as I thought I would at the beginning of the year. Have found very few Barbers this year & none at all since the summer. Hopefully I can get a few more silvers before it gets too cold.
I don't mind hunting in cold weather so much as long at it's at least up around 40 deg or higher & not too windy. You're less likely to run into other people at the parks & schools than in the warmer months. However, I have found that some towns actually close their parks the whole winter, & others turn theirs into a huge Christmas Display, so for the next few months, places to go are a bit more limited.

WTG Dan, nice finds, Congrats.

I'd be very satisfied with those finds, you have quite the assortment of small change except for the Half which is big change. You even have the Grand Slam of Nickels there also. That in itself is quite a feat. Sorry about the lack of Barbers but then you can't always find every thing made. Personally I'm still looking for my first Barber this year, I have the seated and the rest and also the Grand Slam of Nickels but no Barber. Anyway that is quite a nice array of coins Small Change, Congrats to you and hope you get a few more this year.

You didn't do bad at all. Nice score on Silver's! Looks like you have plenty of good spots to go to in the spring. Hope the finds greatly increase as you log on more time with the Explorer. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.

nice silver small change Thanks for posting the pics. It always inspires me when people post their pics. Some days we do not get much at all but we keep pushing forward, determined and when the glint of sliver greets us with her smile it's worth it.

Dan it looks like your doing just fine to me, just think how many detectors have been over those same places you hunted and still you pulled out the goods. nice job buddy :beers:

I don't know about you, but to me a standing quarter is just a beautiful coin, especially when it comes out of the ground with a date on it. Nice finds.

That's a nice collection of finds. I especially like the Standing Liberty quarters and the shield nickel. Those just don't seem to show up very often in people's finds. I only ever found one SLQ and it was the one of the later ones (without the recessed date) so the date was worn off. You look to have one of each variety. Nice haul Small Change.

the Christmas display too. Oh well....it's starting to get real cold. I don't mind that so much...but when the ground starts to freeze....:surrender:
I'll probably still get out a couple more times...but not for long hunts.

I guess my results are pretty good overall, even though the finds do go all the way back to approximately Labor Day Weekend (back when it was still hot if you can remember that.) I guess I am a bit frustrated because 2006 spoiled me when I found over 120 silver coins with an XLT & figured that with an Explorer I could do 200+ in a year. Last year I only got 52 silvers but I didn't get my SE until April & since it was new & I had never used a Minelab before, I had the learning curve to deal with so I just couldn't expect to find as much. Going into this year I had much higher expectations. I have managed to find 76 silver coins so far this year which is a significant increase but it's far short of 200. I am probably taking this hobby too seriously & shouldn't turn it into a numbers game but I guess it's hard to find any other ways to measure success or progress.

I thought I could really learn a lot & improve my skills at finding some of the tougher signals when I created a test garden in front of my apartment a year & a half ago but I must have made every mistake that could have been made when I buried the stuff. I think I buried everything too deep (everything was at least 6" and a couple of Silver Halves were just about at 12"). I did search the area before I buried the targets, but I didn't "sanitize" it. I tried sweeping over some of the targets a few months ago & now it seems like there is more shallow trash there now than when I buried them. & I don't seem to be able to pick up any of then targets yet. I put a few coins on edge & even put a couple of nails & some pulltabs near the coin in a couple of holes. I had golf tees marking the targets but I guess I didn't monitor them often enough & now they are all pushed down in the sod & are covered up. I knew the coins would have to be in the ground for some time before I had a chance of picking them up with the machine. Next spring will have been two years, but I wonder if that is even anywhere near long enough to get much of a halo around them. So far, this test garden has been useless, but I am not ready to dig everything up again & start over. Anyway, that's all I am going to complain about for now. I'm sure that in the coming weeks as it gets colder & I can't get out to hunt near as often, I'll have plenty of time to find other things I can complain about.

Great finds!!!

and a lot longer than Barbers.. Seated were made longer but just don't think they circulated as much... WWII years just seem to be the time they were throwing money away... most of my mercs and wheats seem to be from 1940's
