Looking for coil recommendations...

Nick A

New member
I've got an SE and there was talk about the Pro coil and another coil here both being pretty hot stuff recently. I cannot remember what the other coil was.

I'm generally hunting hunted out places, going slow, looking for the things others have missed. The deep silver dimes, coins on edge and near iron or mixed with junk. I dig a lot of targets that bounce a lot, more often than not it is something good. I think that by going slow, the SE gives really good separation. I also tend not to dig a lot of stuff that is not at least 1/2 way on the depth meter when I am at a site that has modern usage too. (I know that those surface targets can mask deeper stuff, I know...)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

S.E.F. 10x12 coil....Kellyco has them...I couldn't find them on home page but I typed in SEF coil in search box and found some

Nick,
You will improve your machine with either the ProCoil or the 10x12 SEF, over the Slimline coil that came stock with the SE.

I would recommend both!

Nick...the performance for either is about the same from what I have heard. The 10X12 SEF may have a little better separation but it is also heavier than the 11" SE Pro coil. The SEF is also about $20 cheaper than the Pro. I had the same questions you had and decided on the 11" SE Pro coil over the SEF only because it is lighter. Both have great recommendations by their users here on this forum and others. If I had the money I'd own both. I've used my SE Pro coil about 3 times since I received it and it is light and well balanced. I can't say I've made any great finds yet but the conditions where I hunt have been really dry and the ground is super hard. But I feel the 11" SE Pro will be a keeper when I get a little rain around here. Hope this helps.

BTW...if you do decide to get the 10X12 SEF and still want to try out my 11" SE Pro maybe we can swap out for a while just for comparison. Take care.

I've used several coils on my XS and SE over the years. My WOT and Platypus work well in sandy soils w/ low trash. My smaller coils,Minelab 8"& Sunray Stealth X-5 work great for "trashy sites".Here recently I recovered a N.C. Sunburst button along with a1840 half dime in red clay where square nails and hot rocks where reading 00-29 to00-30 with my X-5 coil.( most ferrous sounds were high). No regrets with this coil ! Like to see an 8" Pro soon. Good hunting.

10x12 SEF is slightly better than 11" Pro Coil from users who I have talked to. I would go with that 1 instead. Here are some field tests. They go 10x12, 12x15, 15x18 & 17x21. The last one is a monster. The site is just there for info. Obviously you can get better prices in USA or somewhere else. I believe 12x15 was the best bang for your buck they said.

I have the SEF 12 x 15 and I can't believe how much I like this coil! It's more stable, deeper seeking and locks onto to targets better than the Slimline stock SE coil. I found my first gold ring with the SE since I bought it in November of 2006 using the SEF. It provides great ground coverage for large hunt areas so I know I'm finding more each time I hunt.

That 12x15 can be a little heavy though, hour after hour. I don't have one but this is what I seen reading the reviews. Bungee harness recommended. The 21x17 is not out yet. I forgot to mention that earlier in one of my posts.

Minelab standard slimline coil -- 1.32 lbs
10x12 --------------------------------- 1.43 lbs
12x15 --------------------------------- 1.85 lbs
15x18 --------------------------------- 2.28 lbs
17x21 --------------------------------- ?.?? lbs

I am hunting in iron and trash most times, So I generally use smaller coils, of those the X8 coil has been the most I used, following behind I use the X5 in extreme iron or trash alot also..

As for the larger coils. I got the SE pro coil a while back and gotta say its the best I have used in trash.. as far as big coils go anyway. an much better than any of the older stock coils, and have actually started using that sized coil more in my trashy sites

I have an X12 I use occasionally in spots fairly clean and I think may have deep stuff, but its not really a good choice for hunting in high iron.

Anything bigger than 12 inches just gets too heavy to sweep after a while for me, I had A WOT I didn't use it long because of the weight, I assume it would be good on beaches etc, but way too big for my type hunting and I can always use my X12 the times I need one to cover ground or get deeper..

The SEF and Pro coil look very similar in construction.. I wonder if its a new way of winding or the shape.. Dont know who came up with which first, but one looks like a take off on the other so maybe they work very similar
