What were the differences in the XL Pro and the 5900 Pro and am I correct that they both are able to use the same coils? Is one better than the the other in difficult soil? Also, the IDX Pro with modifications, is it on par with the XL Pro? I'm trying to understand why this mod is done and what it might offer instead of just buying the XL Pro.

In addition, you didn't mention the type of ground environment you'd be hunting in, or the type(s) of hunting (desirable targets and trash targets anticipated) you would be using the detector for.

Now, to your post, but more info would help provide better answers and help:

"What were the differences in the XL Pro and the 5900 Pro and am I correct that they both are able to use the same coils?"... The XL Pro is a renamed 6000 Pro XL. The 6000 Pro XL was a new design that was developed to 'fit' in the newer SL (SlimLine) housing like the XLT and Classic SL's and use the 8-AA battery tray. It works as well or better (better in my opinion) as the immediately former 6000 Di Pro SL and is MUCH lighter & better balanced! The XL pro features the tacking/Locking option of AutoTrac

I am most thankful for you taking the time to pick apart my questions, then give the thorough as possible answers.
So for the woods and fields, low trash relic hunting, I'm thinking your choice would be the XL Pro. (of those detectors mentioned) If that is so, and deep civil war items were sought, what would be the coil of choice?

You are partially correct. I would definitely opt for the XL pro over the 5900 Di Pro SL because it is lighter weight and much easier to use. The battery life and cost of operation are also superior.

However, I would take the XL Pro with a thin-profile 8" coil or a 950 coil IF I was hunting an open field. I would also choose the larger 8"-9

Monte, your replies have cleared up a lot of questions about the different Whites models that I have considered. Simple and light is most important as I am a young senior. When I do get to detect, I'm out from sun up till sun down. I'll send you a message in the weeks ahead with my choice of two. You helped me decide the 5900 would not be best for me. Thank You!
