You guys all gotta remember that because someone gets coins at 12 inches and the deepst you ever got is 7 inches, doesnt mean anyone is lying or your explorer is on the fritz... It all has to do with the ground.. Up here we have so much variable ground, or at a site with tons of iron, there are plenty of sites you cant get a coin more than 4 inches, and if its bad enough you might not even hear it if you lay one right on top of the ground.. Iron is both good and bad.. Good in the fact where thers iron there generally good stuff, but bad in the fact it can (and does) hide good targets no matter what machine your using..
High iron mineralization can do the same thing... So be happy with the fact teh explorer will get as deep as any machine in the same conditions and deeper than most in most conditions with the best discrimination and ID out there... If your only getting coins at 7 inches, I doubt there are any others in the same area getting deeper..
And one very important thing to remember... you cant dig what aint there... if a site has nothing deeper than 7 inches thats as far as your getting..
And knowing what to listen for another big factor... and dont ask me what that is, cause its way too hard to explain in a message

Really said a lot in a few short sentences.
Going out with an experienced Explorer hunter and listening to his deep hits will tell you more than reading a book on the subject. Now to find this sort of fellow as a mentor, but knowing the fellows in the hobby one fellow in the club would surely help you out. Forgot to mention use the same settings so you will hear what he is hearing..

Here in central FL it isn't uncommon to dig a hole that is as deep as my fore arm is long, especially in some of the older ghost towns we have in FL.

i find that a sandy gravel mix is bad for the machine. i had my manuel sens. all the way 16 in areas like this before the minelab exp ran stable. once it smooths out targets start ringing up loud and clear. it will go alot deeper at 16 sens than one would think . i hit 8 wheats and a silver dime at this setting and every thing was 6 to 9 inches deep. i didn;t hear much at a higher sens. looks of unstable chatter. just CRANK HER DOWN SUM! i hate doing it myself. thinking higher sens is always better but thats not the case. it took me a long time to crank in down , with 30 silvers in my bag for april its working great!
